Cable Ties

I bought cable ties today for the luggage. Then I started thinking (always dangerous for me to do that). I'm flying into New Orleans next Sunday for the Conquest cruise. If I put cable ties on the luggage and I can't carry scissors/knife/nail clippers in my carry-on, how do I get the cable ties off of the luggage to get to my scissors? Hmmmmmmmmm....

And you can also put the nail clippers in any of the small outside pockets of your checked luggage. That's what I usually do, it works fine.

The above posters are correct. You are allowed to have nail clippers in your carry on. We did just that several weeks ago. We put cable ties on the luggage and cut them off with the nail clippers once we got on the ship.

Policy still differs from airport to airport on clippers. I still put them in a zipper pocket on the luggage. Also, when TSA opens your luggage to search it after you check it, they replace the cable tie with one of their own. They also put a note inside that they went into it.

We now pack nail clippers, but when we first started using cable ties we would ask either the room steward or if in a hotel the bell person to cut the ties for us.They always seemed to have a sharp object on them to do the task.

Hi pgmrdev, thanks for mentioning how security can cut the cable ties off and then will replace them. I couldn't understand using them because I thought your luggage had to be able to be opened by security. Now I get it and will use them, they are a good idea although I've never lost anything I've heard of things disappearing from some luggage. Thanks again, Chud

We were told by the airlines (Delta, US, & AA) that all suitcase are to be left unlocked. If we put a tie on them, they will automatically be searched. You may be better off putting them on after you get you luggage at the airport before getting on the ships. You can also lock you luggage at this point. I would suggest you do since those ties can be cut so easilly. Don't leave yourself open to someone stealing your personal items. Get a little pack of keyed locks and just put those on. A few dollars for sound of mind is well worth it!

We have flown at least 10 roundtrips on various carriers since we started using the cable ties and we were only searched twice.
Yes, they can be cut easily but it does but they are still a bit more secure than leaving them totally unsecured.

The tie is *not* always replaced. Perhaps 50% of the time it is, it depends on the airport. The inspectors at DTW are famous (or infamous, take you pick) for not replacing your cable ties.

The best thing I have found and like alot better than the cable ties are the nylon luggage straps.. You can pretty much get them anywhere that sells luggage, even Walmart. They a about 4-5 inches wide and have a plastic snap (similiar to those on dog collars??). They are easy for the security staff to unsnap, go through the luggage and snap them back. They are adjustable, so you can make the fit as snug as you like. Also, they come in bright colors so your luggage is pretty easy to pick out at the airport..

We use cable ties and they have been replaced when the luggage is searched, but we have also had our luggage searched when we didn't have any locking device on the bag too. Sometime they would put a tie on it and others not. There is no rhyme or reason - and this is at the same airport.

According to TSA rules, you can carry on nail clippers and even blunt-tipped scissors. I have carried at least 1 pair of clippers on every flight I have taken since that rule was changed Jan 2003.

We purchased combination locks, approved by the TSA. The lock can also be opened with a key that the TSA has. We picked them up at AAA for around $6.00 ea. That way we lock them and the TSA can open them and then relock them.

To be quite frank, you may as well leave the suitcases unlocked or use cable ties for them.

The TSA locks are not helpful because , the only person I have ever known had a digital camera stolen out of her suitcase by the TSA screener.

We know this because
1. she watched hom open the case thru an outside window and was messing around with the camera
2. there was no requiresed TSA card in th ebag t the other end nd the camera was gone.

Nobody at TSA cared either when after returning from the trip she offered to ID him.

Just "file a claim" - 6 months later and still no reimbursement.

All I can tell you is don't but anything but clothes in your checked bags and assume the TSA is full of theives.

I always pack a leatherman in an outside pocket of my checked baggage.
