joyride Posted June 16, 2004 #1 Share Posted June 16, 2004 We have a pretty good group of CC people on the 11/20 Connie that visits this port. It seems we are all a bit uncertain as to what to do here. Most of the posts I have read say to stay on the ship. I'm not inclined to do that usually. Anyone have something good to suggest? Is is really all that bad? <BODY> Joyride View my pictures at: http://community.webshots.com/user/jverette CELEBRITY CONSTELLATION SO. espmass Posted June 16, 2004 #2 Share Posted June 16, 2004 I was there in April. It's always worth visiting a new place so I got off the ship in spite of what the boards said. It is beautiful but when you remember it was created to look the way it does and that what you are seeing is a resort it's not that impressive. We toured both the marina area and the village. Shopping isn't good. We spent a few hours on the island and still had time to relax at the pool on the ship.
parody Posted June 16, 2004 #3 Share Posted June 16, 2004 Since Casa de Campo is not a meca for shopping or siteseeing, I took it as an opportunity to do horseback riding. If one prefers, one could golf although the fees are somewhat pricy. To read more about this resort, go to http://www.casadecampo.com.do/.
judyfssw Posted June 16, 2004 #4 Share Posted June 16, 2004 Our friends went to the evening entertainment and had a wonderful time there. It's a sort of funny day because you don't arrive until 1:00. Lots of people settled down at the pool and then didn't leave the ship until later. It was a different port call for us. Cindy-Sue Posted June 16, 2004 #5 Share Posted June 16, 2004 If anyone in your group golfs, this is pure heaven! Teeth of the Dog is rated one of the top 20 courses in the world! We've been back several times on golf trips after we were there on a cruise!
nywritestuff Posted June 16, 2004 #6 Share Posted June 16, 2004 Oh, there are several wonderful things to do in the DR. First of all, if there are any golfers, an absolute must is the Teeth of the Dog course, which is the best one in the Caribbean. When I went in April, several fellow PAX went horseback riding and loved it. My family (with an 11 year old) took the Bayhibibe Beach Breach, which was awesome. You take a bus from the pier to the Casa del Mar resort. Once inside, you can enjoy a gorgeous pool and the beach with the warmest sand. All drinks are included, even those with alcohol. Note: get the big bottles of water, too. They're free, and they do have wine as well. They have hammocks, chaise lounges, etc. There are no annoying vendors because it's a private resort and it was a fabulous way to spend the day. There are nice bathrooms. Also, they have a nice gift shop where you can purchase Dominican coffee for a very inexpensive price. Cost: $36 pp. but very well worth it. One word of caution: I know others went off on their own and hired private taxis to the public portion of Bayhibibe beach. They were very disappointed (very unclean, annoying vendors, etc.) I can't vouch for that since I did the private resort. Keep in mind, too, that the DR is a very poor country that is desperately trying to attract tourism. I had so much fun that I would return in a heart beat. Marie Stevens Posted June 16, 2004 #7 Share Posted June 16, 2004 Hi, we also did the Bahibe Beach thing and really had a great day, were able to lie on loungers on the beach, go into the warm clean water, use the pool and drink rum cokes all day. Also, there are quite a few nice shops right at the resort that you can walk to. Dont listen to the others its a lovely place. trcori Posted June 21, 2004 #9 Share Posted June 21, 2004 When we sail Millennium in December, this will be the only port we haven't visited, so I'm very curious, and also skeptical of the "yucko" posts I've seen elsewhere, since there also has been a rash of posts describing Ocho Rios, Jamaica, that way, yet we enjoyed that stop very much. Anyway, if anyone who ventured off into the town of La Romana on their own drops by this thread, perhaps you could share your experiences. Once the time gets closer, I'm going to try to find out if they'll be playing a baseball game the night we are there, since Dominican winter ball is legendary, and La Romana is one of the towns with teams ...
