O/T Credit Card Question

Recommended Posts

Lordy, someone has once again gotten a hold of our business Visa card, and this time charged almost $10,000. I am truly puzzled when I have talked with the Fleet people about this. About two months ago, the same thing happened and someone charged around $7,000. At that time (and this time also) they told me that someone is coming up with our number by running millions of numbers through and hitting on ours.

Now how on earth is this possible? All of the purchases were done on the Internet. I've ordered things online and they want to know you mailing address for your CC statements and the name on the card, so if they don't have this info, how are things getting shipped? Fleet (what little they tell us--it a privacy thing they say) says they do not have our name, only the number. Does this make sense?

We closed the account today. We've had AMEX for 20 years and never had a problem. We also have a MC and have never had a problem, yet we have this business account, and rarely use the thing, but it is the one that is being stolen over and over again. Is it possible someone is getting the number somehow from Fleet?

I'm just totally puzzled about all this. What stops these transactions is greed. They go along and order $500 and then jump to $1,000 or so. Once they hit $3,500 or so, this sends up a flag and they deny it and then they call us.

And to add to this mess, most of these shipments went all over the world. Geeze, you'd think they would wonder why we are all over the place!

Has anyone had anything similar like this happen to them? I know we are not responsible for the purchases, but it bothers me someone keeps getting our number from the same credit card company. There has to be something they are not telling us...

I have not had this happen. My old credit card carrier was B of A and if there were charges from out of town they would stop them til they could verify it was us. Now I have Chase and I look up my account religiously every morning to make sure no one is running up my account. I agree it seems suspicious that it happened to that one account twice. I hope you get it resolved quickly.

Kristy...The only thing it says on the card is Fleet Bank.

Doris...I am going to start looking at my account online and make sure this doesn't happen again. Thanks for the suggestion. Believe it or not, I hadn't thought of doing that.

An interesting development happened a minute ago. I called Fleet customer service (I had been talking with the theft dept) to verify what charges they showed on the account, and I found out that there is more theft going on. It seems the $10,000 was on my card, and someone had been using my hubbys also...to the tune of $4,000, but they didn't know it because the highest charge was $1,500, which didn't raise a flag. So if I hadn't closed the cards, someone would have kept going on using his until they either charged over $3,500 or we caught it on our statement.

Considering we rarely use this card, I would think $14,000 in charges in a couple of days would jump out at them, especially since we had the same problem a couple of months ago.

This company has to have a security problem of some sort. This is just too odd of a coincidence.

The strangest thing is someone charged $200 to an online christian bookstore. How weird is that?
