Why do people cheat to save money

Recommended Posts

While I understand where you are coming from as far a people being slobs, I think that's more a lack of home training than anything else. Do you think the trash would be worse if soda was an option? I'm not sure I agree. I mean as it stands right now, you can throw juice, water, coffee and tea all over the place if you wish, I don't think adding soda to the list would make it any worse.

It's just sad that some people don't know, or don't care to clean up after themselves.

As far as the kids, don't get me started, sounds like lack of supervision and poor parenting is the problem.

Reading this thread gave me a good laugh as it brought back one of my most memorable events as a new bride.

My in-laws took the whole family out for dinner one night. DH & I and my two BILs who were still in elementary school. Our families were farmers living on limited budgets so an evening dinner at a restaurant was a big treat for all of us.

My FIL told each of us to order what we wanted from the menu. The highest priced dinner was only about $5 back in the '60s. Each of us ordered an entree and a drink from the menu. MIL was the last to order and ordered a child's portion of popcorn shrimp and a glass of water.

When the meals were delivered my MIL picked up the slice of lemon sitting beside her child's portion of shrimp and plopped it into her free glass of water and then began opening free sugar packets - yes, she made her own free glass of lemonaide.

Half-way through the meal my MIL asked the waitress for another basket of rolls, even though we had all eaten all the rolls we could stuff into our bodies. She proceeded to wrap the extra rolls in napkins from the napkin dispenser on the table (NOTE: this was not a high class, $100 tab restaurant), carefully desposited those rolls in her purse, and served them to the family the next day at dinner.

I was embarrased at the time but found myself doing the same thing years later when DH & I took our three children out to dinner. I found myself doing the same thing my MIL had done years before.:D

I did not have a job to watch other, but when I see a shoplifting, I will report it to the authority because it will help my future purchasing price. I don’t care what other people do on ship. When people abuse the system, it would affect my future cruises. If the cruise companies see their drink profit is shrinking, they have to either raise the drink price, or raise the ticket price.

When we bought a cruise ticket, we made a business deal with the cruise company. Then, we turn around and said, “I like you price but I don’t like your terms, therefore I cheat.”

The cruise company built a ship for around one hundred million dollars (today’s dollar). With such high operating and opportunity cost, at the current price structure, the mass cruise market companies cannot possibly make reasonable profit on room and board alone. They have to make money somewhere else, drinks, casino, photos, shops, tours, etc. If we are not happy with the terms with the company, we don’t have to buy their ticket. There are cruise companies offer unlimited free drinks on board. Of course, they will not restrict us bringing alcohol on board.

I am talking Caribbean....Why would anyone want to walk around with sandwiches in all that heat? They must tast "wonderful". I would be more afraid of getting sick with the sandwiches than buying food on shore.

Many times I have seen notices to not take food off the ship. It is for a REASON. The port does not allow food to be brought in especially fruit. Some people just can't respect anything. They do want they want.

Taking food back to your cabin? I see nothing wrong with this. Why not?

Now lets get to the booze . I think the cruise lines are ripping everyone off. The booze is duty free. Can you imagine the mark up ? I cannot agree with any of the comments about cruise lines having to make a profit, yada, yada, yada.

I think in some cases they hurt themselves. At one time you could buy a bottle duty free and take it to your cabin. The cruise lines made money on this. Now you cannot. Raising prices also incourages people to smuggle booze on board. The price to order a bottle for your cabin is rediculous.

PS. Charlie, you should be glad you don't live in Florida. There are many places that make the ladies check in their large purses to stop the taking of food. ;)

I'm now 58 years old with no children at home now. I carry a small purse - no room for hidden rolls. DH has worked in the restaurant business for 33 years. Wouldn't try to dump free food into my purse now but admit I did do it a few times when the kids were younger:) .

I for one am glad that most of the cruise lines prohibit carrying liquor onboard. Just think what would happen on one of these "party" cruises if the power drinkers all decided they could walk around the ship with their bottles of jack daniels.

"Well, I can bring it on the ship, so that must mean I can pour my own drinks anywhere, or drink straight from the bottle." It may seem extreme but it's in the realm of possibility, and somebody always pushes the envelope.

We brought soda's on our first cruise, a 12 pack each for 7 days. When we were packing that last night and each had 6-7 left I vowed never to do it again. I just don't spend that much time in the cabin to warrant bringing anything for in-cabin consumption.

Garrick,

Not everyone is like that. I cruise on Hal and did many cruises where you could bring liquor on board. I never saw anyone get out of hand, let alone walk around with bottles.

The type that you describe is going to get blasted regardless if they are allowed to bring liquor on board or not.
