Cruise Mermaid Posted February 13, 2006 #1 Share Posted February 13, 2006 Hi, just a quick and probably crazy question - I have a relative who "claims" they just won $1.7m on a royal flush (which I'm assuming is the carribbean stud game) and that he cleared $700,000 - does anyone find anything "fishy" about this - or is it a very good possibility that that amount can be won aboard a cruise. This happened to be a 3 or 4 day cruise out of New Orleans. P.S. - the only reason I ask is that now all of a sudden we are hearing that this is a hoax - and are wondering what the real story is .....plus my husband claims that the stakes are not that high on cruise ships. Thanks ! :)

big_duck Posted February 13, 2006 #3 Share Posted February 13, 2006 Hmmm considering there hasn't been a cruise out of NOLA since Katrina ....
*CruiseFan* Posted February 13, 2006 #4 Share Posted February 13, 2006 I don't think you can win that much on the cruise ships...I thought the highest was like, $25,000 or maybe it was $125,000 but not $1.7M. Besides, off 1.7 would he only clear 700,000? I find it hard to believe he would pay a million dollars in taxes... It's probably a scam. Is he a compulsive liar or one of those people who always has to "one up" but is actually way in debt?
gfsmith Posted February 13, 2006 #5 Share Posted February 13, 2006 We went on the Victory in September and the Caribbean stud jackpot was almost 400,000 then. So there are big jackpots there. just not sure about that big..........lol
CTMak Posted February 13, 2006 #6 Share Posted February 13, 2006 Table games -- whether on ships or in Vegas -- have betting limits as well as limits on payouts. A few games, Caribbean Stud, Let It Ride, for example, have a bonus bet (usually $1) which is part of a progressive jackpot. Actually on Carnival I believe all the ships are tied into the Progressive Jackpot, not just the ship you happen to be on. Still, however, there will be an overall maximum on what the payout can be. The $5 Let It Ride table has, I believe, a maximum payout of $20 - $25 thousand including the progressive jackpot. There are some slot machines also tied into a Progressive Jackpot system which can get up into the millions -- though I've never seen that big a jackpot on a cruise ship - just Vegas, Foxwoods, etc. . So I would suspect if the story is true the person won it on a progressive jackpot slot with, obviously, a royal flush being the jackpot. beelane Posted February 13, 2006 #7 Share Posted February 13, 2006 On the last cruise my husband and I took, there was something showing that someone indeed had won over $1 million. I don't remember what it was they were playing on. I believe it was some kind of slot machine (you know, the ones where it shows numbers going by of what the amount is up to). That was on Royal Caribbean though. I imagine they have similar slots on Carnival.
MERVYN BREMMER Posted February 13, 2006 #8 Share Posted February 13, 2006 First I haven't seen any slots that were in the 1.7 million range at least not on a ship...that having been said Caribbean Stud jackpots can easily hit and exceed that amount based on progressive play. If they pay that out over 25 years and you opt for a lumpsum payout then you get the annunity amount not the full 1.7. So after taxes it could well be 700K. Just thought I'd throw this out to further muddy the issue:D
zydecocruiser Posted February 13, 2006 #9 Share Posted February 13, 2006 Megacash has paid out over a million, but I don't think it got to 1.7. Currently it is sitting around 562,000 and rising. http://www.oceanplayersclub.com/default_flash.asp
big_duck Posted February 13, 2006 #10 Share Posted February 13, 2006 If it was a Carnival Corp owned ship, he would show up here: http://www.oceanplayersclub.com/news/winners.asp
Cruise Mermaid Posted February 13, 2006 Author #11 Share Posted February 13, 2006 Hi and thanks guys for all your input !! :) I'm sorry - it wasn't $1.7 - it was $1.4 (I got the 7 in there from the supposed $700,000 that he cleared) - sorry !! Still trying to figure out if it's indeed a "hoax" - and thanks for that link - I'm going to check it right now !
jakieemma Posted February 13, 2006 #12 Share Posted February 13, 2006 Could it have been a casino "ship" like a Sun Cruz. Maybe it was not on a ship like CCL but on a smaller casino boat? The taxes don't jive. He should have cleared a little over a million.
Cruise Mermaid Posted February 13, 2006 Author #13 Share Posted February 13, 2006 I'm really beginning to think it "is" a casino ship - we are just deducting it's a Carnival Cruise because we know that they just went on a carnival cruise - supposedly out of New Orleans for a 3 or 4 day cruise. However - someone above mentioned there were not ships going out of there? How about a gambling casino cruise out of new orleans - are they still alive and kicking ? I'm thinking that was probably the case. At any rate - I do think the taxes jive - you figure: $1,400,000 x 48% which is what I'm sure what they were taxed - and that comes to like $728,000 - so it's all in that range - we are just trying to figure out if it's B.S. or not - which they are saying it is now - which we think it's just so no one asks them for anything. Not that we would - but believe me - there's plenty of needy people in the family that wouldn't hesitate to have the hand out. I just find it sorta silly that this is my husband's brother who we've always been fairly close to - not to mention my husband's parents who none of the above have told us the story - we have heard it through my husband's mother's sister - which the tie in there is due to her son working with my husband's brother - and supposedly "up and quitting" due to this winning, and now all of a sudden he's going to just "invest the money into their business" - and now the story is - "Oh it was just all a hoax" ..... at any rate - if your head is spinning after THAT last paragraph - I'm really just figuring there is something fishy about the whole thing ... but looks like we may never really know the "true" story .....Just don't know why they wouldn't want to call their "family" and tell them the good news - but again - if they think they are going to be hit up with loans - maybe that's why the weird plot ... I know we won't be asking, or expecting - or anything - just some people get all the luck right!! I keep hoping my lotto ticket will payoff !!! :) Hey - at least this is hopefully providing SOME entertainment out there ! :)
jakieemma Posted February 13, 2006 #14 Share Posted February 13, 2006 When I started writing that post the total winnings were 1.7 million. I knew that looked like I was replying to your post, but it was the one prior :)
cruisinbuddy Posted February 13, 2006 #15 Share Posted February 13, 2006 Was watching a show called 'Secret World of Cruise Ships', watch it if you get the chance. Anyway at that point the record prize for a casino was $1.2 million. I believe it was the slots. You know the ones that just keep climbing until it's won? I really don't think that any cruise ship would have such high stakes. Plus he only cleared $700,000??? I thought if you're in international waters you got it all, even in the states. I have seen a man get a check for $3500.00 on a cruise ship, no irs there. Canada has much better lotteries, NO TAXES on them.
jakieemma Posted February 13, 2006 #16 Share Posted February 13, 2006 Cruise ships file W2-G with the IRS for anything above 1,200.
zydecocruiser Posted February 13, 2006 #17 Share Posted February 13, 2006 If it was a Carnival Corp owned ship, he would show up here: http://www.oceanplayersclub.com/news/winners.asp There are many more winners than show up there. I think this was the biggest, though: MegaCash is the world's largest cruise ship jackpot. One lucky guest even won $1,065,428.00! You could be next. zydecocruiser Posted February 13, 2006 #18 Share Posted February 13, 2006 Very few cruises out of New Orleans and no Carnival ones at the moment. They do have some casinos including "fake" river boats. http://www.treasurechestcasino.com/ While they may be testing, Harrah's doesn't officially reopen until feb 17. zydecocruiser Posted February 13, 2006 #20 Share Posted February 13, 2006 Nope. But they did tow the Belle to Mobile for repairs. Without much competition, Treasure Chest has been raking in the dough.
