Rdabadie Posted May 4, 2004 #1 Share Posted May 4, 2004 Hey Everyone Just got off Victory last week. When I was waiting to tender back to Grand Cayman in the late afternoon I overheard one of the ship's officers talking to some invited guests. Heard him saying that Carnival had ordered a ship in the 150,000 ton range for delivery in 4 years. I was a little disappointed as I assumed that Carnival's next ship would trump RCCL's Ultra-Voyager in size (payback for RCCL annoucing Ultra Voyager as soon as Cunard finalized the size of the Queen Mary) I'm looking forward to seeing a mardi gras parade down Carnival's version of the Royal Promenade Rob
Littlegoo75 Posted May 4, 2004 #2 Share Posted May 4, 2004 I thought the big building boom was ending with the Liberty.... hopefully you're right. It's nice to see more and more ships out there. It means more competition and better prices for us! Snowball Posted May 4, 2004 #3 Share Posted May 4, 2004 FYI - the Conquest class ships, currently Carnival's largest ships in their fleet, are 110,000 tons according to Carnival's website. So if they are planning on building one that is 150,000 tons it would be significantly larger than the Conquest class. I'm not sure whether that is bigger than the ultra-voyager class or not, but just wanted to put it in perspective. Debbie Click here to visit the Miracle Party Cruiser's Group Board. CruiseFever Posted May 4, 2004 #4 Share Posted May 4, 2004 I too thought the big ship building boom was over but on Princess (affiliated brand) they're already talking about a Caribbean Princess 2 and 3 and that ship just went into service last month! I'd think the QM2 would hold them for a while in the big ship category. Is Ultra-Voyager actually being built? L2J Posted May 4, 2004 #5 Share Posted May 4, 2004 Chris - I'm not sure if it's actually being built at this time but I seem to recall something like 2006 was a target for delivery and it was in the 160K ton range. yst347 Posted May 4, 2004 #7 Share Posted May 4, 2004 Ultra-Voyager was ordered last September. It is being constructed by Kvaerner Masa-Yards in Finland. It is scheduled for delivery in May of 2006. It will be 1,112 feet long, 126 feet wide and displace appx 170K tons. GRT is the number that is most often quoted when comparing ships. Gross Registered Tonnage is stated in tons of 100 cubic feet per ton. This is the total internal capacity of a vessel. Displacement Tonnage is the actual weight of the ship and is equal to the weight of water displaced by the vessel, measured in long tons (2,240 pounds per ton).
