By the way, by clicking on the link, I did not have to download the video clip. It opened my Windows Media Player. Cruising89143 Posted May 5, 2004 Author #5 Share Posted May 5, 2004 I know that if it were me sitting there having a drink in that lounge and a wave hit the window like that I would more than likely have to go and change my underwear. Orcrone Posted May 5, 2004 #15 Share Posted May 5, 2004 I saw the Discovery channel special on the building of the QM2 last week. They talked about it having to be designed for the North Atlantic sea conditinos (100 foot waves). My wife told me "no way" to ever taking that cruise. If I show her this I know I'll never be on that ship. (Not sure if I want to brave that anyhow). 1/1990 - RCCL Song of America 4/13/2003 - Carnival Inspiration 10/30/2004 - Maasdam Till sailing on the Maasdam
dan40 Posted May 5, 2004 #16 Share Posted May 5, 2004 Soooo, they got the automatic balcony washer working at last. My wifes' first two cruises were from the US to England and back a month later. In winter time!!! She hurled all the way over and all the way back. It was years after we met before I could get her to take a cruise. Now she is a great sailor but she didn't enjoy the memories that clip brought back. I experienced waves like that on an Alaska cruise. I loved it but boy, was I young then. Boston6 Posted May 5, 2004 #17 Share Posted May 5, 2004 100 foot waves in the North Atlantic are VERY uncommon. From the Richmond Times: Waves that towered 100 feet -- the highest ever observed in the North Atlantic -- formed during two East Coast winter storms in recent years, leaving scientists wondering if storms there are becoming more intense because of long-term climate changes. The waves formed about 200 miles south of Nova Scotia during a northeaster that proceeded up the East Coast around Halloween of 1991, according to Vincent Cardone, a meteorologist and president of Oceanweather Inc., a Cos Cob, Conn., consulting firm. And while scientists considered whether those waves were the real thing or an aberration, similar 100 foot waves developed in the same area in March 1993 during the northeaster dubbed, "The Storm of the Century." The monster waves were almost twice as high as those typically seen in a hurricane, and, Cardone said, were as much as 50 percent larger than so-called 100 year waves -- waves so large there is only a 1-percent chance they will occur in any given year. Never did we think this [the sighting of 100-foot waves] could happen off the East Coast of the United States," Cardone said. "So what's going on here?" Cardone's observations come as scientists in the Unites States and in Europe are examining what appears to be a changing storm climate in the Atlantic. Since the mid-1980s, several damaging storms have struck the west coast of Europe, Cardone said -- including one on New Year's Eve in 1990 that severely battered an ancient settlement on the Norwegian coast. "This kind of storm really hasn't occurred before in that stretch of coastline," Cardone said. "I feel very strongly there is a changing [storm] climate." mohavemommy Posted May 5, 2004 #23 Share Posted May 5, 2004 It's not an internet page that launches, it is a WMV (windows movie) file that opens in the Windows Media or other player. You can always right click the link and do a "save target as" and save the file to your desktop, then click on it on the desktop and see what player opens.
