St. Maarten, St. Thomas, Nassau--where is snorkeling best?

My boyfriend and I will be visiting these three locations in late March and would like to snorkel. We'd be open to off beach snorkeling or taking an excursion. Are there any beach spots/excursions you guys recommend?

Also, for safety reasons would it be a bad idea for just the two of us to go snorkeling off beach together? We're both good swimmers but relatively new to snorkeling (I've been 2-3 times, he's been once--all on group excursions).

Thanks for any feedback! :)

I did Trunk Bay on St.John's in Dec/05 and had a wonderful time. I did with Princess. I would have done on my own (taxis and ferry and on the St.Johns Ports of Call links) but my DH said he didn't want to join me this trip. So doing as a Princess Excursion gave me mates to snorkel with.

Princess Cays is easy but not very good. Worth getting off the ship and doing as there is no extra fee, but Trunk Bay was awesome.

Leaving for Tahiti and French Polynesia in 4 weeks -- cannot wait to get the snorkel gear working again:D
