Lugging Crutches! OUCH!

Thanks CC members for all the tip and information! We sail in a few days and I’ll put all that information to good use.

One more question or suggestion.

I have an 11 year old that has a minor ankle problem and is in Physical therapy right now. I thought that by Sunday we could leave the crutches a home. No, such luck. Doc says we have to lug them on the cruise. However, she only has to use them when pain is bad.

We are not members of the skipper club so we will have to wait our turn in long lines. icon_frown.gif A little worried about her standing and walking this length of time. She doesn’t really need a wheelchair, so I don’t think I can ask for assistants. Any ideas or suggestions? Just wondering if there is a place to park her and pick her up later. Going out of Miami on the Victory. Can't wait!

Just look for a Carnival employee and they will probably have her waiting near the front of the line until you reach that point. The crutches will be self explanatory. Maybe they'll give you an express embarkation !!!!

Yeah they should help you out, but you never know.....you would think people would extend extra courtesy to people who are on crutches...but you never know.....

On the very first day at my new job in downtown D.C. I tripped over my cat down the stairs and sprained my ankle. Obviosuly I didn't want to miss my first day of work or be late, so I went, and my foot swelled more and more as the day went on........that night we went to the emergency room and I had a severe sprain. I attempted to go to work on crutches....at the Metro, you would think people would have been nice to me, a cute young blonde woman on crutches..But NOOOOOOOO.... people pushed and shoved and didn't give a crap. They wouldn't even let me on the elevator! For the rest of the week when I should have been using crutches, I left them in the car and limped around.... so maybe you should opt for a wheel-chair- save her from major arm-pit burn at the same time!!!!!!

Eben if you don't want to arrange use of a wheelchair for the duration of the cruise , you could get one for the purpose of getting one the ship.

Porters will get someone to escort you one the ship with one and then bring it back off the ship when they go out into the terminal.

I would ask one of the Carnival employees if there is somewhere inside for your daughter to sit. Several years ago I had a miscarriage 4 days before a scheduled cruise out of San Juan. My dr. said I was fine to go, but to be careful about being on my feet. When we got to the port, my husband took one of the Carnival employees aside and explained my situation and asked if I could just sit inside with our daughter (she was 5) while he and my in-laws stayed in line outside. They were so helpful and gracious - they brought all of us inside and quietly explained to the folks in the line ahead of us (about 30 people) what the situation was. They were all so kind and allowed us to get on the ship first so that I could lay down and rest.

All of that to say - just ask for some assistance. There are some times in life where you need a little help!

I hope your family has a wonderful trip!!

You guys are great! Several stories had me tear up. I hope my daughter doesn't get burns under her arms! icon_frown.gif I really thought she was getting better, but she didn't have a good morning before school.

I'm not very good about asking for help (unless of course it's here!), but your right I need to ask for some help.

Thanks guys!

I'm sure they'll do whatever they can to help. I might not have gotten much sympathy trying to commute to work on crutches, but I think the sight of a young girl on a cruise with crutches will make a lot of people go out of the way to be extra courteous to ya'll. It seems people are much nicer when they are on vacation and happy, rather than when their doing their daily commute! Good luck.

You might want to talk to your daughters doctor and see if she can use a cane. Whe I twisted my ankle they gave me a cane instead of crutches. Also my wife has a bad back and saveral other medical problems. When she is having problems walking she uses a cane. On our honeymoon on the Celebrity Mercury We took her cane with us. It stayed in the corner of the cabin the whole cruise.

I find that when she does need it, most people who notice it are considerate of the fact hat she is walking with a cane.

afdds:

My first cruise was on cruches. I needed them to walk as my knee was in a brace. A flight attendant radioed ahead to have a wheel chair waiting for me when we got off the plane. I'm glad she did that because the gate (in Miami airport) was sooooooo far from baggage that I would have been exhausted and in tremendous pain if I would have walked to the whole way.

Once we got to the pier for check in with our luggage, a porter (didn't even have to ask) rounded up a wheel chair, checked our luggage and took our docs to check in. We didn't wait at all and there were huge lines. We boarded the ship immediately. The caviat to this is we tipped the porter well for all of his extra attention but it was worth it. The same thing on the return.

If you can get the extra consideration for your daughter then I suggest you take it. It can be very a exhausting process to reach the ship and if she can get the extra help you will all enjoy things more.

Good luck,

Arlene
