On the Mercury: Do you have to go outside to get anywhere?

Is the Mercury designed so that you can always stay inside and not have to go outside to get to the restaurants, shows, etc. I'm going to Alaska and am anticipating possibly cold, wet weather.

There is no need to go outside to get the main dining room (aft) or theatre (forward), cinema (midships) or buffet areas (upstair/up the elevator) from the cabin areas. The outside areas are the two upper decks and the partial open areas on the 5th deck below the lifeboats. Depending on where you are, you may need to go through the shop area, casino, or lounge/piano bar to get where you are headed, but you can stay inside. It may not be cold/wet unless you are going early or late season. Have a great cruise. We are on the 6/30/06 sailing and can't wait.

on the Mercury, are there enough indoor viewing areas for an Alaska cruise, or is it necessary to go out on deck.

 

I ask this because some ships such as RCI Radiance class and Vision class abound in glass, and some such as Voyager class where there were hardly any windows at all and you'd never know you were out at sea unless you went outside.

Mercury has a wonderful lounge ( as you most of the Celebrity ships where it hasn't been compromised by the CdS shows) up forward on Deck 11 ( I believe). Great view from there although you may have people standing outside in front of those windows.

 

When we went to Alaska on Crystal Harmony, it was actually better to bundle up and be outside, though, you might want to consider that. Haven't done Celebrity to Alaska, but would suspect that the experience would be similiar.

We did the Galaxy cruise in 1998 and agree that the forward lounges are wonderful and include opportunities for hot chocolate, etc. when you need to come in from the cold deck area - particularly when near glaciers. Also easy access to the deck when the views are better that way. We're doing the Mercury with our family next July 14th and look forward to this similar indoor/outdoor adventure!

On the Mercury, are there open areas on every deck or are the open areas only on the 3 decks already mentioned?

 

I ask this because I'm a smoker who doesn't smoke in my room and prefers to smoke outdoors instead of bars/lounges. (I already know about smoking vs. non-smoking sides of the ship).

The only time when you would have to go outside is to get from the buffet area on the resort deck aft to the Navigator lounge on the sky deck forward. The resort deck and sky deck are open although the resort deck does have window sides with open center section. You can go down one floor from the resort deck, walk forward and then go up 2 floors to the sky deck in order to avoid outside temps.

I believe that you can stay inside to reach every part of the Mercury. But aside from some mobility issues why would you want to this? Isn't a major part of a cruise experience is to sample the weather while at sea even if it is cold and wet?

As long as you remember to use the correct elevators/staircases, no you don't have to go outside.
