For our July Westbound we can easily fly into just about any London airport - would Gatwick, Heathrow or City be closest for a direct transfer to Southampton? My geography is horrible, but something tells me Gatwick ...

Gatwick has direct train to Southampton, see http://www.nationalrail.co.uk and Heathrow has a direct coach service with www.nationalexpress.com to Southampton. Both connections take the same time, the coach is a little cheaper but there are a lot more trains.

Gatwick is smaller so you will probably get out of it a bit quicker but I cannot gaurantee that.

Avoid City, Luton and especially Stanstead if you are going to Southampton.
