Which side is Port Side

Stupid question... which side is port side. Odd numbered or even numbered cabins? We will be traveling on the POH next October. thanks

Facing the front of the ship, port = left side and starboard = right side.

The words. port and left have the same amount of letters....4.

Ask the captain and he'll turn away momentarily to sneak a peek at a card he carries in his pocket that says, "Left is Port (red), Right is Starboard (green)."

More interestingly, watch when you enter and leave ports of call. Look for the floating buoys--the ones on the right of the ship in the channel as you leave port will be green, the ones on the left will be red; and there may be a black and white buoy defining midchannel if ships can pass in two lanes. The saying is "Red Right Returning", meaning the red buoy is on the right when you return to harbor. (Almost said "when you return to port"--but that's a whole different meaning.)

Here's the easy way to remember, short word and long word:

 

port, left, red

 

starboard, right, green

Also port side, left, red for the color of port as in wine. (I always have alcohol on the mind).

I have a simpler way of looking at it:

 

From the stern:

 

Left - Port

Right - Starboard

 

"Alphabetical" order, reading from left to right

 

Okay...it's a little hokey but it works for me.:p
