juliepaule Posted March 28, 2006 #1 Share Posted March 28, 2006 Hi Mateys Do you kow if they have ATM machines on the ships? I know its a silly question. But just in case I need money. Julie
boop3 Posted March 28, 2006 #2 Share Posted March 28, 2006 On the Caribbean princess there was an ATM right next to customer services. Also in the casino I think too. There are always ones on shore. I bet you pay a pretty heft service fee for the ATM on board.
Hello-Kitty Posted March 28, 2006 #3 Share Posted March 28, 2006 There is never a silly question, no to your question there isn't an ATM that i ever saw, but if you need money you ccan go to the front desk or the casino and they take it out of your cruise card ( which is really your credit card) and i think there is a percntage they charge, maybe 2% not sure i used to do it not any more. m steve Posted March 28, 2006 #5 Share Posted March 28, 2006 Using an ATM or currency change amchine on Princess only adds to their profit and you lose. The odds are better in the casino! Wait until you are on shore and go to a bank.
sea_breaze Posted March 28, 2006 #6 Share Posted March 28, 2006 Golden Princess had one, but Sun Princess didn't. Be careful with relying on this though because I had heard on one of our cruises that the ATM ran out of money.
Trevoli Posted March 29, 2006 #7 Share Posted March 29, 2006 ATM's on ships are constantly running out of money, or are offline for any number of reasons. Even if the ship has one, I would just assume it won't be working, so don't count on that as a ready source of funds. T
TexasMom2 Posted March 29, 2006 #8 Share Posted March 29, 2006 The ATM fee was $5.50 and the charge for an advance on your credit card (sea pass) was 3%. So if you are needing say $400, it's cheaper to use the ATM. Be careful of using ATMs in port, you may get currency not easily exchanged back on the ship (or at a good rate). Take more than you need in traveler's checks then you can always cash them in at home and redeposit.
bjkTX Posted March 29, 2006 #9 Share Posted March 29, 2006 Hmmmm - 3 Princess cruises and I don't remember ever seeing one. But wait - I work for a major bank - I think I should cruise on several ships and determine the actual need for ATMs - all for business purposes of course!!!!! But wait - I work for a major bank - I think I should cruise on several ships and determine the actual need for ATMs - all for business purposes of course!!!!! On the Grand it was just to the right of the casino cage, along the wall. I think you do need to investigate all fees on all ATMs, on every ship, and file a report in the next couple of years. I am a great note-taker so I would be willing to volunteer as scribe. :D
juliepaule Posted March 29, 2006 Author #11 Share Posted March 29, 2006 Thank you very much. Since I am a Canadian lord knows what the exchange rate would be for that. Yep, I think I will just bring mega money and use it to pay off my credit card charges if I do not gamble/spend it ashore. This 2 and 3 % can add quite a bit. It's enough they charge you 3% to convert to Canadian funds. I needed to check off a box to insure that they charge me in US funds and allow my bank here in Canada to convert. Otherwise its more expensive if Princess does it. I am so looking forward to my cruise. Leaving on Sun Princess April 7. I am so on HOLIDAY MODE as we speak. thanks again Julie
kendon Posted March 29, 2006 #12 Share Posted March 29, 2006 For cash, I've either gone to the purser for money from my credit card ( a small fee applies). The other option is to find a bank while in port and use the ATM there, which I've also done without a hitch.
bjboothman Posted March 29, 2006 #13 Share Posted March 29, 2006 You can cash a personal check ($250 per person per cruise) at the purser's desk at no cost. Some ships have ATMS (the Coral does, the Dawn did not when I was on it). The ATM fee was $5.00. Sometimes they are out of cash. The ATM fees on land aren't always that much better for the trouble it was to get them. At a bank at a port in Maine the fee was $3.00 but the machine only allowed me to withdraw $200. So I had to do it twice. On the ship the $5.00 fee allowed me to withdraw $400 (that's as much as I tried - don't know if it gives more or not). So a land-bank isn't always a great option either. The ATMs on the ship do sometimes run out of money though.
Floflegs Posted March 29, 2006 #14 Share Posted March 29, 2006 Are there ATM machines at Fort Lauderdale airport? This might be a better deal when coming from GB
TexasMom2 Posted March 29, 2006 #15 Share Posted March 29, 2006 We can only withdraw $400 in a day from any ATM also. ATMs in Mexico will give you pesos. I've never used one in any other port. Fort Lauderdale airport would be a good option to get that last $400 :)
PhillyCruiser Posted March 29, 2006 #16 Share Posted March 29, 2006 The cheapest option is to go to a supermarket in Fort Lauderdale for those last minute purchases, use your ATM/debit card at checkout, and ask for cash back. No charge. Joan P.S. I get to do this on April 7th, before we board the Sun Princess (hi, Julie!)
bjkTX Posted March 29, 2006 #17 Share Posted March 29, 2006 Are you guys trying to put me out of business and ruin my chance for free (business) cruises?????? Where's the compassion - whats a few ATM fees among fellow cruisers???? :-)
Thanksforyourinfo Posted March 29, 2006 #18 Share Posted March 29, 2006 Plan according to your needs to have enough cash w/o the ATM or credit card advance. The traveler's checks work for me. They cash them for free. But then, keep in mind that more cash can be had for a fee, from either the ATM or cash-advance on credit. RESIST the urge to get more money. RESIST. RESIST. RESIST. RESIST. RESIST. RESIST. RESIST. RESIST. RESIST. RESIST. RESIST. RESIST. RESIST. RESIST. RESIST. Just kidding. Have a great time.
