seeing wildlife in Belize

Hi, anyone who can give me any advice on where to go to have the best chance of seeing the wildlife in Belize in it's natural habitat would be appreciated. Thinking the zoo may be no different than the zoos here in NY....and although I've read there are a couple of wildlife sanctuaries (monkeys and more) not sure if there's a good chance of seeing anything at all at those? Thanks.

Actually we saw a fair amount of wildlife on our tour to the ruins at Lamanai.

You take a boat down the New River and they stop whenever any wildlife is sighted. We saw giant termite mounds, bats, a baby alligator and MANY different birds including the Jaracana (which walks on water). At Lamanai, we saw(and heard) howler monkeys which frequent the site.

I have not been to belize yet (will be there in 2 weeks), but I did see a short news clip on a local channel on the zoo. The animal exihibits are part of the natural surrondings and actually seeing the wildlife is a hit or miss event as it would be in the jungle. It is not like a traditional zoo. It would probably be better to get there first thing in the morning when animals are generally more active. I was looking into visiting the zoo myself, but the info I have read from other posters regarding the distance from the port and the road conditions changed my mind. Good luck and I hope this was helpful.
