Belgenland Posted April 24, 2006 #1 Share Posted April 24, 2006 Dear, The steamship NOMADIC was launched on 25th April 1911 at Harland & Wolff shipyards in Belfast, some meters away from Titanic's sleepway. NOMADIC is a First & Second class tender for passengers embarking White Star Line, and later Cunard White Star, transatlantic liners calling in Cherbourg. NOMADIC ferried Titanic's millionnaires on 10th April 1912. NOMADIC survived both World Wars serving the French Navy and the Royal Navy. After the Wars, she resumed her ferry activity serving RMS Queen Elisabeth and RMS Queen Mary. In th 70's , she was transformed into a flaoting restaurant moored on the Seine River in Paris. She had a second career until 2000. Due to new EU regulations, her licence has been cancelled. The NOMADIC was sold by auction on 26th January 2006, the Department for Social Development of Northern Ireland bought the ship for Eur 250,001/£171,000 By the time, Belfast Industrial Heritage Ltd, collaborated with White Star Memories and launched an International fund-raising campaign and collected for more than Eur 85,000/£57,000 pledges. BIH and WSM finalised the fund-rainsing campaign by setting up the NOMADIC PRESERVATION SOCIETY (NPS). NPS is now collecting the money from the pledgers. Anyone giving at least Eur 75/£ 50 will automaticly become a Member of the NPS, receive free entrance to the ship and have his name engraved on a plaque permanently kept on board the ship. It is expected that NOMADIC will cross the Channel from Le Havre (France) to Belfast (Northern Ireland) next July. You can still help NOMADIC's restoration by visiting our website http://www.savenomadic.com/pledgeinfo.php We thank you very much for your help !
