shore excursions - greek islands and Turkey

We will be doing the Med cruise in August. Wanted opinions on doing the shore excursions or doing it on our own for this trip. We are three adults and two 11 year old girls. The places we are stopping are Athens, Ephesus Turkey, Heraklion Crete and Corfu Greece.

 

Have been to Athens and Corfu before and am well traveled so not afraid to venture out on our own.

 

Should we book cars (taxi's or rentals) in advance (and how) or are the shore excursions worth it.

 

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the info - I posted the same question there. However, that seems to be for all cruise lines. Is there one just for RCL in Europe? Are the same land excursions offered to all cruise lines in the same ports?
