Anyone ever find gold?

Typically, you are guaranteed to find some gold in your pan--because the pans they give you (with dirt already in them) are "salted". Great for kids, but kinda hokey for some.

If you're panning in a trough, that's all the gold you'll get.

On the other hand, if you're panning in a stream or creek, like in Juneau at the Gold Creek trip, i used to tell my clients that that first "salted" pan was for practice and fun. After you get the hang of it, grab a shovel and try out the creek itself. You can usually find a few flakes here and there, though usually not as much as in that first pan.

If that's your thing, avoid gold panning in Skagway and other places where there was never any gold mining (Skagway was an access point to the gold fields, not a mining town).
