S...L...O...W boat to China (well, across the Pacific)

The Queen Vic will be following in the QE2's wake from the start of her World Cruise segment from LA in 2008 - following the same route the QE2 ran in 2006; Los Angeles - Honolulu - Pago Pago. While the QE2 ran these segments in under three and a half days, the Queen Vic takes over four and a half. The run times are QV 110 hours for each sector, the QE2's 82 and 80 respectively. So the QE2 gets later departures (22.00 from LA vs 17.00 and Midnight from Honolulu vs 18.00) and fewer sea days...

.....of course, being a maiden world cruise, and the third voyage of the QV, possibly Cunard are sensibly padding the schedule - although it does illustrate on the longer sectors how the QE2's superior speed can cut a day off a long passage.

I have it on VERY good authority that Queen Elizabeth 2's retirement is timed for when Queen Victoria returns from her maiden world cruise. Queen Victoria is expected to be seen off Southampton sometime in 2012 or 13 (given a following wind and an incoming tide). Stories that an entire generation will be born and die on board whilst she circumnavigates the globe have been denied by Cunard. They have also denied that QV will stop at Alang (as she will be due to retire by time she reaches there), a Cunard spokesperson said "we fully hope that Queen Victoria will complete this historic voyage, even if she was overtaken by two men rowing across the pacific in a bath tub".

(ie, I couldn't agree with you more)
