Paynes Bay and Tuckaway Ice Cream

I'm usually on the Accra Beach bandwagon, but I've been back to what used to be my favorite beach in Barbados and it's really great these days.

 

Over the last few years, the beach at Paynes Bay (at the Coach House entrance... any cab driver can take you there) has come back. It's great. the sand is back making it wide and nice. the water over the last 2 days has been very calm and really feels good (your not fighting the current or waves). Beware that there isn't much shade, but if your willing to spend the money, there is a beach vendor with chairs and umbrellas. Also, the Coach House Restaurant has a beach service that serves food and drinks. and there is a shower at the top of the walk by the road (hidden on the beach side of the gate).

 

We visited Tuckaway Ice Cream shop just south of Paynes Bay. it's on the other side of the road from the beach. The ice cream is fabulous.. All home made on site and natural.. The kids had chocolate, I had coffee ice cream and my hubby had soursop (which is not for every one). The had lots of other flavors.. almond, peppermint, sundae, rum and raisin. and more.. You can get milk shakes, sundaes etc. It's open every day 9a-9p even Sundays and holidays when it's open from 4p-9p

I'm so glad to see this post. I'm considering a trip to Paynes Bay during our stop in Barbados in September. Can you recommend a taxi driver/tour guide? Ideally, we'd like to spend a few hours at the beach and a few hours on a scenic tour. And our three year old would love to see the Green Monkey's.

unfortunately I can't really recommend anyone. You can try Cameron Reid as a taxi driver (you might do a search on this board, as I know others have posted about him). Also Glory Tours, but I'm not sure whats going on with them these days, as they don't seem to be returning phone calls.

 

We love Paynes Bay.. have for years. September would likely be good there as long as we are not getting heavy wind from any kind of weather system. It's usually flat and calm. another option is Accra/Rockley Beach which I love as well.

 

We don't have anykind of zoo here, seeing the Green Monkey's might be a hit or miss thing. The Wildlife Reserve in the northern part of the island, is the best place to see them and usually around 330-4pm. this might not fit with your ship sked depending on which ship and what time you will be departing.

Thanks for your input, Sunnie! I really appreciate your suggestions. Our older daughter is doing a "Best of Barbados" tour through Glory with my brother and his wife. I hope that goes well. We thought we'd take our little guy to the beach and for a glimpse at the monkeys (my husband and I were in St. Kitts last fall and saw monkeys all around the island...I know my son would get a kick out of them!) If the weather cooperates, I think will head to Payne's Bay...otherwise, we'll check out Accra.
