Transportation to and From Miami airport?

Hi we are cruising on our first CC 7/23 out of Miami on the Valor. I have been told that the airport is only 8 miles from the terminal. We will be a party of 3 which includes a 4 yo. What is the best way to get from the airport to the terminal? I know Carnival provides transportation at $24 pp but it looks like it might be cheaper to take a taxi each way. Any experience with this?

Thanks for any suggestions!

The flat rate cab fare is $21 plus tip. Make sure you tell the cab driver you want the flat rate. Some here have reported cabbies trying to run the meter.

Taking a cab from MIA to the port is cheaper and easier than Carnival transfers. Especially if they want to charge you for the 4 yo.

It is cheaper to take a taxi and it's much faster then having to wait for Carnival's bus to come along and then fill up. It also puts a bus load of people at the terminal to check in all at the same time. For us, there is only two adults and we don't pack to heavy so we take the rental car shuttle to a rental car place, then their shuttle to the pier, both of which are free and leave very often.

There are a fair number of mini-van and SUV taxis. We were able to get our party of 4 (two adults and two adult-sized teens) and about a dozen pieces of luggage into one of those type of taxis. If you use the services of a redcap to help you with the luggage at the airport they will get the right taxi for you. The folks with porters have priority over the folks just standing at the curb waving, from what we experienced. Well worth the tip we gave him (about $10).

Oh, I think that the flat rate may have gone up a bit...I believe we paid about $24 to go into Miami. Still a good deal.

Cab fare from MIA to the port is $24 (fixed price - make sure your cabbie knows that ahead of time - metering is more expensive). 4 will fit in a standard cab for the short ride but it isn't as comfortable as one of the mini-vans or SUV's and there are plenty of them at the airport. You'll be at the port in no time, and won't have waited for the bus to be crammed on and overpaid!!

I would say to take a cab if you want to save a couple of bucks. On the other hand, I will feel safer by using the carnival bus. If anything was to happen (mechanical problems) they can get in touch with the cruise line, and since there will be many passengers in the same bus, they will send anotherone to pick you up and get to your cruise on time. Who knows what would happen with a broken taxi in the middle of the highway!!!. Consider both options.

Funny I booked with Travelocity, and we had to add the transfers seperate. $24pp round trip. I would double check with them. Travelocity made one or two other boo boo's. They booked us twice on our flight into miami, but no flight back home. And although I told the travel agent to book our seats together on the plane they weren't, and now I'm scrambling and watching the airline's webpage like a hawk to find open seats so my husband and I can sit together. And when I asked travelocity to do something to correct their mistake, they called the airline, but did nothing but tell me to show up an hour earlier, to try and get seats off of any no shows. The plane leaves at 6:15Am, how much earlier can I reasonbly expect to be there? UGH.

Well, I spent the better part of today on 3 separate phone calls with Travelocity. First lady assured me that by purchasing Carnival's air, I would indeed have the transfers. There was no extra charge on my itemized bill. She said she would send me an email so I would have something in writing to that effect. When I got the itemized bill, of course there was nothing to that effect. Just said I had "cruiseaweigh" or whatever it said. So I went thru it all again with another lady. Same thing. Called back again, and got a much more helpful lady. She got on the phone with Carnival and ASSURED (there's that word again!) that yes, we DID have the transfers, even they don't specifically list them out in the itemization. She said quote "When you purchase your air thru the cruise line, you automatically get the airport to/from pier transfers." I told her I would like to have an email from her stating that in writing, and she said she would do that (haven't gotten it yet tho!). I'll let you know the outcome. :)

Found this in the FAQ on the Carnival website. Truthfully, I didn't even know I purchased the "FlyAweigh" program!! :)

Guests who do not purchase Carnival’s “Fly Aweigh” program have the option of purchasing airport/pier one-way or round-trip transfers for the days of embarkation and debarkation. ****Guests are required to make reservations 14 days prior to sailing. Please contact your travel agent for details service is only available during normal operating hours. Guests who do not purchase Carnival’s "Fly Aweigh" program and do not purchase transfers are responsible for all transportation to and from the pier.

Can I assume that the same rules apply leaving the ship-from the pier to airport? How hard is it to get a van taxi from the pier? 4 people luggage

The fly aweigh program includes the transfers to and from the port.

Cabs are extremely easy to get from the pier as they line up and make the run all day as folks are leaving the ship for the airport as folks at the airport are making their way to the ship. Since it's a fixed fare ($24 to MIA/Pier), it a quick and fairly easy cycle for the cabs to make. Cabs are plentiful! Quite a few of the cabs are mini-vans as there are so many families making the cycle.
