Emmabelle Posted June 16, 2006 #1 Share Posted June 16, 2006 I just saw on my local news this morning about shark sightings in Miami. I'm a newbie to snorkeling, do you have to be concerned about sharks if you take a boat tour to snorkel?
WindinmySails Posted August 20, 2006 #2 Share Posted August 20, 2006 I went snorkeling in April at the coral reef off of Key West and was TOLD that the only sharks I might see would be bottom feeders. I am no expert, but that is what we were told.
greatdanek9 Posted August 24, 2006 #3 Share Posted August 24, 2006 When I snorkeled off of Key West, I saw no sharks but did see numerous barracuda. I was told if I saw a barracuda, not to swim towards it, just to go the opposite direction. You don't want to challenge it or threaten it in any way, they can be territorial. Also, take off ALL jewelry and shiny objects before snorkelling - the barracudas could mistake it for a fish and attack you. Aside from being nervous about not pissing off the barracuda, we had a great trip ! We even saw a HUGE manta ray glide right below us as we prepared to get back on the boat. That was the highlight of that snorkel trip !!
