Dress code clarification

We are having a problem here with understanding the dress code , we are booked on an Alaskan crusie aboard the spirit in August and I'M reading the dress to say that I'll Need to have at least a sports jacket to eat in formal dining room my mother is reading it as that i dont just a shirt and tie will work except on formal night. Who is right and are there other options for food on Formal night as if i could get away without spending $100 - $200 on a sppors jacket i dont want to as im having weight loss surgery post cruise and the money would pretty much be wasted.

The buffet is always another option for dinner. The dress code in the dining room is fairly casual with no jeans or shorts. But you can wear khaki pants and polo shirts and you will be just fine. We actually only eat in the dining room the first nite as we prefer to not have to change out of our shorts or bathing suit to eat dinner. The food is just as good and sometimes the items are served there as in the dining room. You just don't get waited on!!!! Actually....we were even told by our waiters that we didn't need to dress up to eat in the dining room on formal nite but opted for the buffet instead as we didn't want to feel "underdressed"!!!!!!!

Do you have a Salvation Army or the likes of a thrift store around?

They really do have some nice items and at a steal of a price.

Good luck on your surgery. I don't blame you for not want ing to spend so much.

Have a great cruise.

Matt, I saw plenty of men dressed in just a shirt and tie on formal night... it was very hot and many men that DID wear jackets had them hanging on the backs of their chairs.... so I don't think you would feel too terribly out of place in a shirt and tie... Don't get me wrong, the majority are wearing either a suit or tux.... BUT, there were plenty that weren't... Have fun!!!! And good luck with your surgery!

Other than formal night my DH wore khakis and a polo shirt to the dining room. I wore dresses every night. Our friends dressed similiar to DH. The guy wore khakis and a nice shirt while the girl wore either nice pants and a top or a skirt and top.

On formal night we all wore formal attire. Last year on our first cruise DH did not wear a coat to formal night but did wear a tie, most the men at our table were in dress pants, dress shirt and tie. This year they all were with jackets.

Personally if someone is dressed neatly I don't really pay much attention. I'd hate to see someone eat at the buffet just because they didn't have the "right" attire.

There is some wonderful food in the dining room, don't miss it! Good luck on the surgery and have a fabulous cruise.

Yes you can get away with it as the dress code is "suggested" and many don't follow it. I myself try to go as it is suggested. I don't really care what others do except I would like them to come clean to dinner. That was my last experience on Miracle back in April. The table next to us not only wore clothes more fit for scrubing floors or working on cars but they were dirty, sweaty, hair dirty and UNBRUSHED and this was FORMAL NIGHT. I STRONGLY felt the matr'd should have escorted them out. Formal night did fall on the day we were in Freeport and I am guessing they went deep sea fishing or something-which is fine- vacations ares for enjoying the things you like but you would have thought they would have sense enough to order room service instead of coming like that.

Try a consignment shop or thrift store. Often you find great things there. I have also heard many who go on E-bay. Hey you could do that and then turn around and resale your jacket after the cruise is over.

I agree about going to a thrift store. My nephew, while in college, bought ALL his clothes at thrift stores. Now that he's an executive, he STILL likes to browse the thrift shops. For the most part, the clothes they sell are clean, and certainly very inexpensive. (I often complimented my nephew, and was amazed when he told me where he purchased his wardrobe!)
