Rental Car or Excursion??

Hi, I am going a cruise for the first time on July 9th, my question is whether or not to go on an excursion or get a rental car when we return from the cruise. We had thought about doing an excursion but from what I can tell we will be back at the airport no later than 1sh, our flight doesn't leave until 8:30pm, seems like an awful long time in an airport. Do you know if it is possible to get a rental for one day that will pick you up from the port and if so, is that better than doing an excursion? If you need to know we will be on the Elation.
