Snorkeling Independently at Nassau and/or Half Moon Cay

DH, DD and I will be leaving for a cruise (along with 16 other family members and friends) this week. We want to snorkel, but we don't really want to do the snorkeling excursion through Carnival (it's 4 1/2 hours and we would rather go for an hour or two ... so many other things to do!). We have our own snorkeling gear and thought about just snorkeling on our own right off the beach, but with the beach being busy and the sand getting kicked up, I doubt seriously that we would see very much there. Have any of you snorkeled independently and seen much? Are you familiar with any other companies that you would suggest for snorkeling excursions? Thanks so much!!!! I have learned so much here in the short period of time since discovering this board!

We have snorkeled on our own on HMC right from the beach. Along the rocks leading out to sea there are many fish. Easy snorkeling the day we were there and didn't cost us anything since we had our own snorkle gear.
