Does anyone know if you can get there on your own by water taxi or something, or do you have to take an excusion?

You have to take a boat. It's about a 35 minute ride from Nassau. It's definately worth the trip. We went there this past weekend for the day. Very beautiful and great snorkeling.

Rose Island is a Private Island and not accessible to the public. Tour companies have to pay for permits as well as per head.

 

You'll need a tour to get there. Snorkeling is good in several areas.

Ther Sea Island, Flying Cloud, Seahorse and barefoot cruises all go to the north side reef right off the beach for snorkeling. The Robinson Crusoe tour goes up island a bit, and snorkeing is off the rocky south side.

 

Snorkeling is good in any of these areas.

I did book with SeaIsland. The snorkeling was great. I've only snorkeled a few places so I don't have much to compare it with but I really enjoyed my day here. The island is beautiful, the beach was also. I highly recommend going there!
