Tipping ???

I've talked with stewards and wait staff about this. IF you leave all your automatic tips on your S&S account - that person gets everything he/she is entitled to - no pooling. AND they get to keep any extra $$ you give them.

However, IF you go to the purser's desk and reduce or remove your auto tips, and then tip in person to whomever - those tips are suppose to be pooled, and I've been told they're on the honor system (and most abide by it). So - the individual does not get his fair share as he would have if the tips were simply left on your S&S account.

SO - The only way to be sure 'your' steward and waiters get what they have worked so hard for is to leave the auto tips in place. Hope that makes sense?:)

Thanks Cotton - that's what I was hoping! We always leave our tips on the S&S and then give an extra tip personally the last night of the cruise - I am glad to hear that they get to keep it all (since they are the ones that earned the extra tip!) ;)

:D Thank YOU for understanding. I don't know why it's so hard for some folks to get it. It's really quite simple.:)

Tipped the dealers in the Casino in the Bahamas, Vegas, Atlantic city, and on every cruise I have been on whether I win or loose.

Oh yah and right here in Canada where I live. ;) Who was it that made that silly comment about Canadians not tipping:eek:

Blackjack dealers will always prefer you bet the tip but cannot tell you this even if you ask. So put it in the corner of your normal bet and you will get a friendly look from the dealer. You win, they win double the tip as well.

I've never heard of this before, but I like the concept. If you loose, does the house or the dealer keep the bet?

I never tip dealers... it's their JOB to do what they do... what extra are they doing for you??? They don't chose the cards they deal out.. I don't get what tipping the dealer is all about... maybe I'm missing something!

Now servers and room stewards are a different story. We just got back from Triumph and tipped our server and steward at the end of the cruise in addition to each of our automatic tipping. The automatic tip that gets applied to your account *I think* is very generous considering it is per person!!! So in addition to this auto tip, we tipped more, but did on our own judgement based on service. The service and steward also get paid to do what they do, but they went out of their way to make our cruise much more enjoyable.

As far as a dealer goes... I don't know how much more enjoyable they can make losing or winning... so I just don't get the tipping the dealer thing..

I would imagine that a significant percentage of casino visitors are only casual gamblers -- particularly on a cruise ship, so I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that many of them were also unfamiliar with the "Casino Tipping Manifesto".

Yeah, no kidding. Most of that casino stuff was over my head. :o

As far as our wait staff and cabin steward, sometimes we tip extra and sometimes we don't -- it just depends on the service. On the Victory, we should have REDUCED the waiter's tips. He wasn't good at all. Unfortunately, in the end I felt guilty about taking money out of his pocket (which I know is ridiculous), and left the tips on the S&S. We spoke to the Maitre 'd, but service only improved marginally the following night, then slacked off again. What we did was tip extra (in an envelope on the last night) to the bar waitress we had in the dining room that week. Our kids had soda cards and she brought them their cokes every night, so I knew she wasn't getting tipped for those. Other than that, only two or three people at the table ordered drinks each night, so I wanted to make sure she was tipped well for taking such good care of the kids (and me with my glass of champagne).

PA -

I would bet the comment was from someone who has worked in the service industry. Many years ago, I worked in a major tourist area as a bartended and waitress. I prided myself on giving exceptional service, and I usually made very good tips. While I am sure there are some wonderful tippers like yourself from Canada, it was pretty common (more often than not) for many of us in the area to get stiffed by our neighbors from the North. I know it was not a service issue for example, one night in particular when I was tending bar, my waitress had a group of Canadians at a table for quite a while. They had a wonderful time and kept telling her how great the service was and how much they were enjoying themselves. They paid the check and left nothing. I suspect that many tourists just do not understand that tipping is not automatically included. While I understand how you might be offended by such a general comment, there are many of us who were frequently "stiffed" by Canadians, and thus, tend to generalize. Not fair, I agree. I hope that helps you to understand why someone might make that comment.

I don't know who made that comment, and I'm not sure which thread Dood's talking about...but

While I realize it's not fair to clump all Canadians in that category ...

In N.O., when I was F&B director/chef in hotels/restaurants, Canadians were infamously bad tippers. Sorry, but this is true. Quite often I would have to listen to a server moan and groan, sometimes in tears, about having spent SO much time and extra energy on a table of Canadian folks - only to be left a $3 tip or nothing at all.

PA, it is my understanding that those Canadians who reside east of the Ottawa River and West of the NB border do have that reputation, rightly or wrongly. ;)

I"m finding this real confusing. I paid for my tips with the booking and it seems like most of my cruise will be spent making sure everyone else is happy but me!!! Not that I'm stingy but geez.

I agree!!! I'm not going to spend my whole cruise worrying about who is supposed to be tipped what. I have a few rules I go by.

1 - it's my cruise, I worked hard and saved to be able to afford it.

2 - The staff onboard the ship are there to serve me.

3 - I'm not out to provide a living for every staff-person onboard, If they don't like the arangements they made with the cruise line then perhaps they should look into another line of work.

4 - Provide me with exceptional service, and I'll reward you well for it.

5 - provide me with "ok" service, I'll give you an "ok" tip.

6 - Provide me with substandard service, and you get NO reward from me.

Some will call me harsh; perhaps I am, but I don't reward subpar service with MY hard-earned cash.

Gee, we had you right up the the Casino Tipping Manifesto (obviously the author is a or was a casino employee).

If you don't play casino table games don't worry about it. If you do and you are new at it, just observe how and what the other people at your table tip.

The Casino is optional entertainment, thus not covered under the tipping scheme.
