Question for those who sailed on the Monarch

Has anyone that sailed on the Monarch just taken a trip to San Diego's old town on their own? Any advice for getting there from the ship and back to the ship? Do you advise an excursion through RCL?

The train station is just across the street from the cruise terminal. Just hop on a San Diego Trolley Blue Line and get off at the Old Town Transit Center. Its a very short ride. Here is a link to the SD Transit web site http://www.sdcommute.com/

 

There are also other things to do within walking distance from the ship. They include Boat Tours of SD Bay, the aircraft carrier Midway, ferry to Coronado, shopping at Seaport Village or Horton Plaza.
