Mobile, AL Port

Several months ago I heard on the news that the Port of Mobile was going to be getting another cruise ship. The report stated that Carnival would be given first opportunity to add another ship to this port. It also said that if Carnival declined the offer that the Mobile Port would be open to other Cruise Lines. Does anyone know any information on this?

From Mobile. Yes our Mayor and City Council are trying hard to lure in another cruise ship. We (Mobile) would like to get a 7 day cruise which would require a larger vessel than the Holiday. Everyone feels this would open up another cruising market. As you stated Carnival gets the option to match any offer to bring in a second ship. I personally feel this type of contract was a mistake when it was agreed to by Mobile. It would seem unlikely many cruise lines would invest the time and money needed to decide on locating a ship in Mobile only to have Carnival match the offer. Also there are other issues. The terminal needs to be expanded as well as parking. This would require the purchase of additional waterfront property. And if you have ever passed through Mobile you've probably noticed the large number of automobiles using the Wallace tunnel. This is extremely crowded and in need of an alternative route. Unfortunately the Department of Transportation seems set on building a bridge south of the existing tunnel. This could have a serious effect on the size ship possible for cruising. The City Council is trying to make these concerns understood. So it may be some time before Mobile is home port to another cruise ship.

Within reviews of the Holiday this week it was reported that the cruise director stated that the Holiday would be replaced in the future. A steward also stated on the same sailing that the Holiday would be replaced by a larger ship. Since the Holiday sails at over 100% on every sailing it would make sense to place a larger ship here.

Thanks so much for the update! We sailed on the Holiday in May of 2005 and it was a fantastic trip. We live in Ocean Springs, MS; thus, the Mobile Port is very convenient for us. The port was very easy to negotiate because someone dropped us off and then picked us up, so we didn't have to worry with parking. Keep us posted as further developments occur. :)
