From reading the boards here, the most important "rule" about booking guarantees is that you should book the minimum category you would be happy with. If you would feel that you might get "stuck" with the porthole, then it doesn't sound like you will be happy if you are not upgraded.

 

The second "rule" is that, there are no guarantees about whether you specifically will be upgraded or not, despite what's happened to others in the past. All the annecdotal evidence from others may point to a high liklihood that you would be upgraded but you still might end up with exactly what you booked and paid for.
