Have the Horse Races been replaced with another event?

I had heard that there was not going to be horse races on the Freedom? Has RCI just stopped them or have they been replaced with another event?

Yes. We were on the Explorer last week and they used car races instead of horses. People bought the cars like buying the horses. I believe the race was down the promenade.

We had HORSES on our 8-27-06 Mariner cruise. ;)

We had a horse race on Mariner 9-24. Our Cruise Critic group won best lookinig horse.:D

I was on the Explorer is June and they had the car races down the promenade. I "bought" one of the cars at the auction and won the race. It was soooo much fun!!

What are these races? I have only cruised once but just booked Mariner for Dec. and it sounds like something we may be interested in.

This is a brief summary......Usually just before the Love and Marriage Show they hold an "auction". You bid on the right to "temporally" be the owner of the car for the race that is held on the last day at sea. There are 6 cars. They are auctioned one by one. The price you would have to pay varies. Can be $100...can be $400. Depends on the bids. Then the day of the race one person sits in the car (it is tiny!), another pushes, another is the pit crew. The CD rolls die that will have the cars either....not advance, advance one place, 2 places, or 3 places. There is a "pit stop" roll that will keep you still till you get a double. First one to the finish line wins the entire pot. The pot I won was $1,100.

No horse races anymore (except on the Mariner?)? This was such a "cruise thing" back in the day....it would break my heart to think that they would stop such a fun tradition. :(

The car race sounds fun! I miss the horse race. I just got off Navigator and they did not have either.

There were no horse races on the FOS when I was there in June. Nothing replaced them.

Thanks for all the responses. We are on FOS this Thanksgiving with a group and have always bought horses in the past. I guess we'll miss it this year.

It is up to teh individual CD to decide if they want to do this or not. I know in Alaska they normally replace the Horses with Moose.

 

It is one of the old cruise activities that 50% of people see as hokey and outdated, the other 50% see as a cruise essential. So it is all down to the CD and the feedback he/she gets from the crowd they get on that ship. Just because it works on one ship/itinerary, does not mean it will work on all....

They had a "HORSE" Race on AOS in August. It was fun to watch and what a suprise ending with a horse that was 5 places back win the race.
