Pompeii Questions???

The bus makes stops along the way. The ride is about 40 minutes including the stops. It was about 4 euros return. We asked the driver to let us know when we were there and he shouted us when we needed to get off.

Take the train if you want to do it yourselves. Bus to the train station is right outside the terminal. Just remember to validate your ticket!! we spent 5 hours at Pompeii and will go back next time we are there. Loved the audio guides once we figured out how to use them.

Next time we will stop in Herculaneum too. Just ran out of time.

Is it possible to buy an all day ticket for the train? Or do you need to buy individual trip tickets? If individual, could we buy one from Naples to Sorrento, get off at Pompeii for a few hours, and then continue on to Sorrento? Do you by any chance know which bus # goes from the port to the train station? How far is it?

You mentioned a bus to the train station, do you know if the cruise ship offers a shuttle to the train station? If it does not, how much will a cab cost to the train station?

Where did you buy your train ticket, and how do you validate them.

Did you have any concerns about possible train disruptions such as strikes. Did you have a plan B, if there was no train service, or poor train service

A taxi to the train station only will be quite difficult to get. Most drivers are trying to tout their cabs for full day outings and will be reluctant to take you just to the train station untill almost all the passengers are off.

If you are just going to Hercluaneum, I would use the bus. For Pompeii, the bus leaves to the train station at the top of the car park outside the port. You can get your ticket for the journey, bus and train, from the news stand over the road. the owner will direct you to the correct bus stop for either the train station or Herculaneum.

We toured Pompeii in August and it was unbelievably crowded! We got there mid afternoon and the audio guides which we had planned to use were all gone. We didn't have a lot of time so decided to wing it on our own. Big Mistake!!! We should have joined a guided tour group so we would know what we were seeing. They do sell a great book with overlays that is incredible and very helpful. I would say join a group so you will get a better idea of what you are seeing. The place is huge!

I am would like to know which option is best, or any other suggestions

1. Book a shore excursion to see Pompeii (with a 2 hour limit) and then proceed to some other excursion. This method is less streeful, but would 2 hours be enought time to see the bulk and main highlights of this area.

 

2. OR Go to Pompeii via train. There is no time limit but more worries. With this method there are worries of possible train disruptions and getting lost. Of the 2 choices this is more economical BUT is it worth it.

 

I agree with taxatty. Heraculaneum is wonderful. It was certainly not crowded and I understand is much less crowded than Pompei plus it is very easy to find from the station (five minutes walk straight ahead).

 

Do buy a guidebook, well worth the expenditure. Heraculaneum has so much to see though; we were there much longer than two hours, but that was our choice.

 

Don't worry too much about getting lost, etc., the staff at the station are used to issuing tickets for Heraculaneum and Pompei. Just ensure that you receive the correct change and watch out for pickpockets, particularly at the station and in the train. Please do not the last sentence put you off, it's great fun to travel in another country.

How about a further option. Go by bus to Herculaneum. It is much safer by bus, no strikes. The bus stop is right by the ship so no travelling through Naples to the train station. It stops right outside the site at Heculaneum and picks up again for the return journey at tha same spot. Herculaneum is more complete than Pompeii .

Rats! We visited Heraculaneum a year ago and did not know we could have caught a bus - it was not mentioned in our guide books, so we used the train.

 

Know any shortcuts to getting to and from Pompei?
