oceanfreaks Posted July 20, 2004 #1 Share Posted July 20, 2004 We will be leaving on the 8/29 conquest to Jamaica, Grand Caymen, and Cozumel. This is our first cruise, and are unsure as to what we should carry, travelers checks or cash, or both?? Does it depend on the island?
Bunkie103 Posted July 20, 2004 #2 Share Posted July 20, 2004 We took both and if we wanted the cash my DH cashed a travelers check at the purser's desk.
Cotton Posted July 20, 2004 #3 Share Posted July 20, 2004 I like to take both traveler's checks and cash. You can cash a t'check at the purser's desk, but (I think this is mentioned in the Welcome Aboard booklet you receive w/your docs) - The purser's office carries a limited amount of cash, so if you need to cash t'checks, it's best to cash them the first few days onboard. On the islands, I have used t'checks for ONLY large purchases, i.e., jewelry, crystal, etc. Otherwise, I use cash for all smaller purchases. Try to have smaller bills ($10, $5) with you on the islands. If you offer a larger bill, you just might get pesos back in change. Hope this helps...? mirrajay Posted July 20, 2004 #5 Share Posted July 20, 2004 In the past (on land) I have been charged a "processing fee" for cashing my travelers checks. Should I expect the same if I have them cashed at the pursers desk?
tinydancer21 Posted July 20, 2004 #6 Share Posted July 20, 2004 I'm traveling to the Mexican Riviara do you think I'll have any problem cashing TC's at the ports?
elvisillusions Posted July 20, 2004 #7 Share Posted July 20, 2004 We took both, and the casino on the Conquest will cash up to large amounts of travelers checks w/ no charge... we never went to the pursers desk to cash ours... have a super cruise!! NinaCO Posted July 21, 2004 #8 Share Posted July 21, 2004 I usaully take about $200 in cash (plenty of $1's) and the rest of my money in T. checks. Have never had a problem cashing the travellers checks at the purser's desk, even late in the cruise. But, I've never wanted to cash an enormous amount at once. I never take more than $100 in cash when I visit a port. I carry any other money in traveller's checks. The stores treat the T. checks just like they do cash, and they have as much bargaining power. retiredldo Posted July 21, 2004 #9 Share Posted July 21, 2004 On the islands dont be afraid to use your credit card because in most cases you will get a better exchange rate then if using dollars just a thought as that is what we have always done Pete
