Hubby and I are going to spend 1 night after our cruise in HNL. Does anyone know of a good hotel that is ocean front or close to ocean front that has a pool and has late check out. Our flight is at 11pm.

There are several hotels in Waikiki that are ocean front - none of which are inexpensive. Halekulani, Royal Hawaiian, Sheraton Waikiki, Outrigger Reef, Outrigger Waikiki, Moana Surfrider.

The Halekulani is an excellent hotel with a great location however it is very high priced. Royal Hawaiian is also known as the Pink Palace, if you don't like pink don't stay here. Moana Surfrider is one of the original Waikiki hotels it is nice and generally the price is not so bad. Sheraton Waikiki is a good hotel as is the Outrigger Reef, Outrigger Waikiki.

We have stayed at all of the hotels listed except for the Halekulani although we have eaten at the Halekulani several times and a friend of ours plays music outside for sunset. If you don't stay at the Halekulani walk down the beach and listen as well as watch the hula for free.

I didn't mention the Hilton Village because it is not one of our favorite hotels as it is not central Waikiki but more of a gateway to Waikiki hotel. Have stayed at this hotel as well and it is nice as one would expect a Hilton to be.

Most hotels you can request a late check out but most will not go much beyond 2:00 PM. However most hotels will allow you to store your luggage until it is needed.

If you are staying at the Royal Hawaiian and if space is available (that is that they have plenty of availability the next night), you can arrange for checkout as late as 9 pm. However, it is $75 (plus tax) extra for 6 pm check out and $100 for 9 pm checkout. This is not guaranteed and must be approved by the hotel booking management. The RH doesn't rent a room for the day and will only do this for overnight guests who need late checkout; they will only arrange it a day or two in advance (during your stay). You could reserve the room for two nights and then ask to stay only one plus pay the late checkout fee the second day (instead of the full night). You must checkout before 9 pm or you will be charged the full amount. I don't know if they would allow you to do this, but you can ask. You might try the Sheraton Waikiki as well.

We stayed at the Outrigger Reef Hotel last year and enjoyed it very much. It is right next to the Halekulani. Rates are much more affordable than most of the other oceanfront hotels. If you have the Entertainment Book, you can use its ID card to get "Travel Club" rates. When you check the hotel online for rates and availability, be sure to check off the Travel Club option. Right now, rates were listed at $145 per night for our cruise at the end of January.

I do not know how they handle late checkout, but we checked out at the regular time and they held our bags until we were ready to leave for the airport. They also had a free hospitality room, which allowed us to shower and change our clothes. I think they allow use of the room for 30 minutes.

The area around the Reef Hotel is still undergoing renovation, but from the webcams in the area, things are looking better than when we were there. We did not have any trouble with noise or rubble. In fact, traffic was limited, so it made it more secluded.

If true beachfront is not that important, there are other hotels around that same area that are offering "construction specials". The Ohana Islander Waikiki has a $99 per night special through January. It's about a block and a half from the beach at the corner of Lewers and Kalakaua streets. It also has a hospitality room available and some other nice perks.

Hope this helps.

Aloha,

Don
