I heard that someone had to be evacuated due to medical condition. Carnival is offering:

15% refund

20% Future cruise voucher

Air/Hotel expenses up to $200 per person

Anyone else confirm the above?

Is this true that Carnival offered the above things to these passengers???

I was on the Legend this past summer and we lost a day of our cruise and only got a $50 onboard credit. We were told by Carnival prior to departure that we would be reimbursed for any out of pocket expenses due to the delay and to keep our receipts, which we did and afterwards Carnival said they weren't going to do this. We sent letters and called and all we got was a sorry for the inconvenience. Don't get me wrong, we still love Carnival and had a great time once the cruise got on its way, but I was disappointed in how it was all handled and the information that was be given out by Carnival representatives.

So basically, if this is in fact true that they are offering these compensations, to those travelers, make sure you get it in some sort of writing (faxed, emailed to you) b/c you just never know.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

CARNIVAL LEGEND JANUARY 3, 2007

7 DAY CRUISE NOW DEPARTING ON JANUARY 4, 2007

January 2, 2007

Dear Carnival Guest:

We want you to be aware that the Carnival Legend will be delayed returning to Fort Lauderdale. The ship was forced to make a significant route deviation in order to facilitate a special medical emergency evacuation. As a result, we will need to shorten the January 3, 2007 scheduled 8 day cruise to a 7 day cruise departing on January 4, 2007. We will now visit Colon, Panama on Sunday, January 7 (7:00 AM – 5:00 PM) and Limon, Costa Rica on Monday, January 8 (7:00 AM – 3:00PM).

We sincerely apologize for this situation. However, the health and safety of our guests and crew are our number one priority. Carnival will provide you with a 15% refund and a 20% discount on a future 3 to 8 day cruise departing prior to December 15, 2008 (excluding Holiday cruises). The discount will apply to the cruise fare only. Please understand that this offer is non-transferable.

In addition, with proper documentation, we will reimburse you up to $200 per person to cover the cost of extra travel costs including air change fees and hotel accomodations.

Should you elect to cancel, you will receive a full refund which should be processed in approximately two weeks.

Most importantly, we want to thank you for choosing Carnival for your vacation. We are looking forward to welcoming you aboard the spectacular Carnival Legend.

Sincerely,

Vicki L. Freed, CTC

wow. i think that was great of them. don't get me wrong, i feel bad for those of you who are missing a whole day of your cruise. that stinks. but if the ship can't get back due to something like this, i say kudos to them for doing the right thing. at least they are making a good faith effort, showing good will, and are trying to make it up to you as best as they can.

on our victory cruise, the ship (coming in before us) didn't clear customs. the passengers could not get off -- we could not on. there was a very significant delay in embarkation resulting in many people waiting outside in the hot sun w/ stinking overflowing porter poties, no water, many suffering from heat stroke.

When we finally boarded and got underway, it was late. THEN, 2 hours into the cruise we had to turn around and go back to Miami b/c of a medical emergency. Rumor has it the man had a heart attack and died. We had to get a coast guard escort, they had to meet the police. Eventually we got underway for a second time, and the captain seemed to make up most of the time overnight. We on that cruise, however, did not get anything. No $50, no $100, no future credit. just a "sorry ladies and gentlemen." So, I'm glad to see they are doing the right thing now.

Wow... this is the first I heard about it (no call from Carnival). Thanks fellow Cruise Critics for passing this info on. There's nothing I can do about the flight arrangements, we'll just fly down and book a hotel somewhere. :)

Interesting question  . I wondered the same thing as I completed our Fun Pass on Sunday. It asks for a home number and an emergency contact but it does not ask for cell or other ways to reach you prior to boarding.

In our case we are flying to Orlando on Friday 2/2 and visiting with family prior to cruising out of FLL on Sunday. If this had been our cruise how and when would they have contacted me . Now in our case our emergency number is the cell phone of my adult son - so if they used that he could have easily called us. But what is the protocol for those who are no longer at home? I'm guessing that there are folks just showing up at the port that have no idea of the change.

I'm sure we will be hearing more...very soon!

Generally from what I've seen here, Carnival calls those booked through them, and the TA's contact those booked through them... not sure why Tek didn't get a call, but getting down early never hurts!! :)

You did not miss a port and you departed on the correct day. Why would there be compensation:confused: At least you got an apology and the family of the deceased got the body instead of having to wait a week. Kind of different when put in another perspective:)

you are right. and it was so, so very sad. when we docked in miami (after leaving), we saw the family walking with police off the ship and through the parking lot. i'll never forget ... there were 2 small children w/ a woman. a boy and a girl. the girl was carrying a stuffed animal. I was truly near tears thinking that these poor people had probably waited w/ such great anticipation for this trip -- just to never happen at all, and worse yet, to result in what it did. very, very sad.:(

We are on the Jan 3 Legend cruise and we have been in Fort Lauderdale since Dec 31. Luckily Carnival got hold of my daughter who called us late last night. It's been a scramble ever since. We had to take our rental car back today, so we moved to the Mariott in order to shuttle over tomorrow.

Carnival did confirm (I called them back last night)

$200 per person for out of pocket expenses

15% off this cruise and

20% off a future cruise good until Dec 15/08

That's pretty good.

Too bad about Belize though.

Toni

I think the difference here is before and during. If the problem is before the cruise began I don't know how trip insurance could affect how many people may cancel. Here passengers are actually losing a day of the cruise through no fault of their own. So the company may offer something as an incentive to keep passengers from canceling.

During the trip well I guess they can offer you what they want because of the language that is in the contract.

It's just a guess on my part.
