Lesbian Couples who love cruising

Hi gemsm:

I am a neighbor! My partner and I live in Columbia. Congratulations on celebrating your 40th birthdays. Are they at the same time?

Cruises are a great way to celebrate events. We celebrated our 20th anniversary on our Feb. 2006 cruise. And on this Feb's cruise, I had the pleasure of celebrating my 50th birthday. And by the way, it's not nearly as bad as people think.

When you sail with RCCL do you leave from Baltimore? Do you know what lines are using that port? We're thinking of taking our nieces on a cruise next summer and I thought it might be fun to leave from Baltimore.

Sounds like arb711 is looking to meet other single cruisers.

Mithryl, looking to meet any cruisers, not just single. Describing myself as single was just information - I am most definitely not on this cruise to "cruise"!

Her 40th is the day we leave in February -- Mine isn't until August so I am celebrating early.

Actually I have only ever sailed out of Miami and San Juan. The only ship out of Baltimore is RCCL's Grandeur of the Seas to Bermuda or 9-day Carribean.

We may do that one day but we enjoy Freestyle cruising much more than traditional cruising so we tend to try and stick with NCL.

Hi all,

This thread continues to grow. woohoo

I have a question, off cruising for a moment...

Now that we have decided to do the one week cruise AND Ptown for Woman's week I was wondering if anyone has been. We are thinking of 5-7 days but womans WEEK runs about 12 days and we are not sure if we should go beggining or end. Anyone have any experience here?

Thanks for any help on this or just Ptown in general.

patty Anne,

Well it's been 10 years since I have been to Ptown. Some friends and I rented a beach house in the off season. The area has changed since then I'm sure. I would look at r family vacation site. They have alot of fun events Planned for July28-Aug.4th for families. I'm pretty sure womens week is still in Oct. I would look into renting a house or Condo early. I have friends that spend alot of time in Ptown and things book up quick. If it's just the two of you you might look into some of the bed and breakfests there. I just found this site for you guys. http://www.ptown.org/happenings/events/

Hope this helps,

arb771,

Hope I didn't offend you. I didn't mean to imply that you were "cruising" while "cruising". I understand completely just wanting to meet nice people. I'm really glad you've join the thread.:)

Mithryl, no worries, no offense taken. I'm new to the thread, was just introducing myself!

New to cruising, too - a spur of the moment decision a few weeks ago after a long day at work. I've always wanted to cruise to Alaska, and suddenly a little voice in my head said, "well, do it!" :D

I've really been enjoying all the Cruise Critic threads, love hearing everyone's advice and experiences and stories. And it was a pleasure to find this one - I've been a little afraid that I would meet only straight couples, so it's great to know that there are some "sisters" around!

arb711,

Well be prepared to get hooked. I love to cruise and think it's the best vacation. I'm in the airline industry and love to travel. I was hooked after the first cruise I took with my partner. I love the idea unpack once and wake up in a new place. You can do as much as you want and as little. It's nice to have nice dinners and then take in a show afterwords. There is always something to do wheather you like the casino or going to the comedy shows. Then you dock at some of the most beautfil places in the world. I love the fact you can spend time exploring and then your back on the boat ready for another destination and another place to explore.

I have never had the draw to go to alaska but I have seen others cruise pictures and it's beautiful. I'm more of a carribean girl. I love the sandy beaches. So you'll have to let me know how your trip to alaska was.

Glad you join our thread and looking forward to hearing about your cruise expirence.

Hi Everybody - And welcome to the thread all you newbies :D .

Well, we're going to do it! We're going to book an Olivia cruise. We totally agree that they are outrageously priced and we don't really feel compelled to do a cruise with a ship full of our sisters, but having said that the Caribbean cruise in January '08 encompasses Linda's 60th birthday in addition to giving us a break from winter cold weather.

A 60th birthday is pretty special and we agree that it would be really nice to just be able to be US, and not have to worry at all about what someone else would think if we hold hands, kiss, look at each other with love in our eyes, dance - whatever....just be ourselves the way we are around our lesbian friends -- all that while cruising the Caribbean and visiting places neither of us has been (we're left coasters). Add to that the terrific entertainment Olivia seems to provide and we're sure looking forward to a fabulous week.

We normally cruise in a balcony cabin. Needless to say we won't do that on this cruise. But I get claustrophobic in an inside cabin so we're going to spring for the least expensive oceanview. I think we're getting pretty excited about this cruise.

Does anybody know what the dress code is on an Olivia cruise? Since they sail on Holland, does it follow the Holland code? What about formal nights? Are there any? If so, can I wear my tux :D ? Hmmm, this could be REALLY fun!!! :D

Hope everyone is having a fabulous summer. Enjoy.

Carol (and Linda - who is at work making money to pay for this cruise :D )

Hi Carol & Linda,

Congrats on booking the Olivia Cruise. You will really enjoy it. We sailed with them to Alaska on HAL and yes, the dress code was pretty much the same as any other HAL cruise. There were formal nights, and you can most definitely wear your tux! Many women on the cruise we did wore tuxes. The main difference was that Olivia brings their own entertainment, so the shows are mainly Lesbian talent versus the cruiseline folks. All the bars have lesbian entertainers as well.

A limited amount of Olivia-wear is also available in the ship shops.

Looking forward to meeting you both on October 15th!

Vicki

waunabcruizin,

Ladies congrats on booking your cruise. What a way to celabrate a birthday! You'll have to let us all know gow your cruise was when you get back. Your going to fall in love with the Caribbean the water is crystal clear.

Have a great time planning your cruise. I think that's the best part of a cruise.

Dress on an Olivia cruise is a bit more relaxed than on a non-Olivia HAL cruise. You can wear jeans in the dining room at night and you will see more dockers, dress pants, blouses than usual. On formal night you will see anything from tuxes to dressy pants suites to dress pants with a blouse to dresses. You usually won't see anything less dressy than that. I think you will have a great time. I am going on Olivia's Mexican Riviera cruise this October.

Be aware of one thing about the Caribbean '08 cruise.........K.D. Lang is the main entertainer and they have announced that not everyone on the cruise will be able to see her because she is only giving one concert instead of two, like normal. They are going to do a drawing for tickets to see who gets to go. I think it is totally wrong to do this and if I was going on that cruise I would be mad.

Anyway.....you will have a great time no matter which cruise you choose.

Vicki - Thanks for the info. We're really looking forward to meeting you 10/15 as well. Counting down the days....

Shan9700 - Yeah, I agree that planning is the best part of the cruise. That, and actually going on it!:D Actually, I've sailed in the Caribbean on a Windjammer cruise years ago, and bareboat chartered a 33 foot sailboat in the Bahamas. Linda's never been there, though, and I've never been to Tortola or St Maarten or Turks Caicos or HAL's private island, so that'll all be new to both of us. I agree totally with you about the Caribbean. Snorkeling there is like floating in a pool of warm gin, it's so clear. Love it.

Gator83 - Agree about K.D. Lang. You'd think they'd either get her to do two shows or forget the whole thing! Drawing lots doesn't sound very fair either....I NEVER win anything! :( Except the love of my girlfriend, which is the best thing on the planet anyway. A couple of friends of ours, BarbG and Urs, will be sailing with you on the Mexican Riviera cruise. They are in the same RV club as we are. They're really nice!

Thanks to everybody for the info on the dress code. I'm having a tux made to order for our wedding in October (Linda wants me to wear a tux, so, ok) so the Olivia cruise will give me another excuse to wear it :D . I may even wear it on our short 4-nite Celebrity honeymoon cruise but with a dressy feminine blouse instead of a tux shirt, black tie and cummerbund. Have to see how it will look...

Carol (and Linda).

Waunabcruzin: You only get a chance in the K D Lang draw if you book by August 31st. This whole deal is currently a very controversial subject!!!

Just a note re dress code. You can wear shorts too in the main dining room as long as they're not short shorts or cut offs. Not many people do but it is acceptable. Also, there is an alternative to the main dining room which is definitely casual. You can eat at the Lido which is buffet style. They have anything from a sandwich, pizza, pasta, to a full meal. We've found that they often serve something similar to the dining room.

On the big cruises they normally have a Theme night such as "White Night" When everyone dresses in white for the evening. There's a big party on the Lido Deck. Olivia usually announces the theme approx 4 weeks before the cruise.

Don't miss the "sail away party" that they have on the pool deck. It's always fun. You get to meet the Olivia entertainers & they have dancing.

Normally the star performer doesn't sail with you. The concert(s) are held before the ship sails. That's why HAL doesn't normally sail until 10:00pm for an Olivia.

Olivia's website www.olivia.com has a forum where you can register & meet others travelling on this cruise. You can pick up lots of useful information there from guests who have travelled on many Olivia cruises.

They normally discuss packing, passport reqmts, price of a cocktail, organize get-togethers before sailing etc etc etc. It's been a bit quiet this last week as Olivia just made a major change to the forum & people are just slowly getting to use it again!!!

OK, now I've given you more than you asked for!! Sorry, verbal diarrhea!

I know you will have a fantastic time. We've been on 6 & look forward to 2 more next year. Oh & yes, everytime we book we have a little bitch about the price!!

Oh my god...it is probably a good thing we cannot afford Olivia at the present time (maybe someday)...because if I lost in the drawing to see k.d. lang I would probably threaten to jump overboard. To know she was RIGHT THERE ON BOARD and I couldn't see her...well, let's just say that she was the first concert my wife and I went to together, and we have seen her several times since, and...I would hate to miss her if I was on that cruise!

Hi All

Well, we're still not booked on Olivia. I have called their 800 number 6, repeat 6, times and each time I have left my name and number and each time nobody has called me back. :( I'm beginning to think this company is a joke. Certainly their customer service is horrible. Does nobody really work there? Hmph. Ok, I'm off my soap box.

We'll try again, but if we can't get a human to speak with us I think we'll just forget the whole idea. Has anyone else experienced this awful service?

Carol and Linda.

We were thinking of cancelling our Carnival Pride cruise in Jan 2008 to take the Olivia cruise with k.d. lang. Then I read about the drawing and decided that doing a drawing for the concert was not fair ( I never win anything either  ). I agree they should have her do 2 concerts or find a different entertainer. So we decided to keep our reservation for the Carnival Pride in Jan. 2008.

OK, We have to take back all the rotten things I said about Olivia. I hit the enter button for that posting and the phone rang. It was Olivia. WE ARE BOOKED!!! :D I'm keeping our fingers crossed that we get k.d. Lang tickets, but if not, so what....we'll still have a ball. We have a fully obstructed view (translation: no view) cabin tucked behind a lifeboat but we can still get light in the room and see if it's raining or not :D . Can't wait.

That is very unusual to have Olivia not get back with you. They are usually really good with their service. Is the phone busy when you call and that is why you are leaving a message or are you calling after or before hours (just curious)?

I encourage anyone that was planning on going on the Caribbean 2008 cruise with KD Lang and who is now not going because of the ticket issue to call Olivia and let them know why you are not going. I think they REALLY need to know that this ticket issue is costing them business.

Thanks

Hmm, I was about to try to convince my dear partner to let us book that cruise since we were already planning to go to the Caribbean next Spring -- I assure you, my huge crush on k.d. lang had NOTHING to do with my desire to be on the ship!:D But now that I see it is a drawing and there is only one show, I'm going to book us the more convenient (date wise) and MUCH less expensive Caribbean Princess instead. Looks like my honey won't have to watch me swoon over k.d. after all...

tiggr33: Stacey

Hi all, not sure I fully introduced myself. And I am just getting caught up on the board, as I was on vacation. I am Stacey and my other half is Cayla. I am a self employed stained glass artisan, who specializes in LGBT pieces. Cayla is in Emergency Medicine, she is a full time Paramedic, a per diem ER Nurse, and a per diem SCTU Nurse. I have 13 cruises under my belt, all on Disney. She has done an Alaska HAL, and Disney. We have our next cruise in October on Disney. Starting in 2008 we are looking at other lines. We are huge Disney fans, and just got back from Disneyland. In addition to crusing, we plain love to travel. We also camp and boat. For the remainder of 2007 we are going to Florida twice, a cruise and a trip to Vienna, Prague and Salzburg. So that's us in a nutshell.
