Getting to Atlantis

We want to visit Atlantis (shops, casino, eats) for a few hours. Should we get the excursion from the ship (Majesty of the Seas) which is the ferry or just catch a cab? We intend to see some of the island as well - Queen's Staircase, etc. What is the best way to get around - ship excursion or my local transportation? I haven't been to Nassau in 20 years, so I am sure that it has changed a little bit.

I imagine the ship excursion is pricey. Just off the ship is the water taxi 'stand' and return transport to Atlantis is only $5.00 or $3.00 one way if you want to catch a cab back. We took the water taxi and the guy told us a bit about the houses we were going by - pointed out Nicholas Cage's house, a place where a part of a James Bond movie was filmed, etc.
