Port Terminals Anything to see??

We will be visiting several ports, Hilo, Kona, Nawillwilli, Kahului. We are booking shore excursions but wondering if you can walk to any shops or sights from the ship terminals?

While not scenic, there is good shopping within an easy walk of the pier in Kahului, Maui. There is a Longs Drugs, which has tourist items and sundries, some interesting shops close by, a grocery store (Star), etc. A longer walk away is Queen Ka'ahumanu center, which has some typical mall stores as well as some more unique Hawaii-related shops.

We just returned from the Pride of America (Jan 13-20) and found that the majority of the port terminals are located in industrialized areas. The exception is Kona, which is a tender port. There are many shops and restaurants within easy walking distance of where the ship's tenders drop you off in Kona. We rented a car in Hilo, as well as on Maui and Kauai, and found the Thrifty shuttles quick and easy to use. The port terminal on Maui is a long way from any shopping or sights; on Kauai, you could hoof it up the hill to some strip malls, but as I remember, it's a pretty fair trek. Hilo is also a nice little town on the ocean, but again, the ship's port is quite a ways from shopping etc. That said, we did see Hilo Hattie's shuttles making frequent rounds at the ports. They deliver you to their stores, which is a shopping experience in itself! :D
