Cruzfan34 Posted January 26, 2007 #2 Share Posted January 26, 2007 That's one thing I never understood. They don't allow irons onboard, but I can assure you that just about every woman on that ship has a curling iron, including me. I brought one on our last cruise and I used it and left it out on the counter after I unplugged it and our room steward never said a word. I'm also bringing hot rollers on this cruise. I gotta do my hair...there is no discussion.
suezyq50 Posted January 26, 2007 #3 Share Posted January 26, 2007 Yes they are. I used my curling iron on a stubborn wrinkle.
Happy ks Posted January 26, 2007 #4 Share Posted January 26, 2007 It's the wattage of the appliance, not just because it is a heat source. Irons are not allowed because they use up too much "juice" and will blow the fuses. The ships just don't have unlimited power and the use of irons will overload the system. Curling irons and straighteners are not as strong as a clothing iron. I think they just draw the line at irons, although travel irons probably wouldn't hurt. Mine doesn't even get hot enough to burn my hand  . You're fine to take your curling iron and straightener.
GORDONCHICK Posted January 26, 2007 #5 Share Posted January 26, 2007 If you have coarse hair and don't normally need the added heat of ceramic straighteners or curling irons, you may on the cruise. The humidity made my hair wild! But I normally do use ceramics.
Crown08 Posted January 26, 2007 #6 Share Posted January 26, 2007 100% agreed. If you go anywhere humid you MUST have ceramic... otherwise things will get crazy! Can you imagine if the cruise lines didn't allow straightners? Now that would be a sight!

Sunshine91 Posted January 31, 2007 #10 Share Posted January 31, 2007 It's the wattage of the appliance, not just because it is a heat source. Irons are not allowed because they use up too much "juice" and will blow the fuses. I think it may also have something to with an iron having that large flat hot surface, that if accidentally left flat on something, could more easily overheat & start a fire. We bought a travel steamer specifically for our recent Noordam cruise, since HAL doesn't have self-serve laundry on any Vista-class ships (the smaller ships on HAL do have them). I also took all 3 of my curling irons (varying sizes). I was very careful to make sure that I not only turned them off, but unplugged them when finished. Brneyznfl Posted January 31, 2007 #11 Share Posted January 31, 2007 I take a straightener AND a curling iron..don't ask, it depends on what kind of a hair day I'm having. :D
Tasha999 Posted February 6, 2007 #12 Share Posted February 6, 2007 I take my own ceramic dryer and flat iron. The hair dryers on the ship are 1600 watts, and it takes longer to dry. You may not bring them in the carry-on, mine was taken in 2002 in Cancun.
