This looks like a good place to snorkel on your own. From the Calica pier, how far is it? Can you just take a taxi there and back to the ship?

Any info would be great.

Don't know exactly where the Calica pier is, but if it's in the Playa Del Carmen area, you should be able to get a taxi to/from Yal-Ku. From Playa Del Carmen, it should about 30 minutes each way. Yal-Ku is worth the trip. Be prepared to pay a small entrance fee to Yal-Ku and don't forget to use only biodegradable ("ecological friendly") suntan lotion.

Yal-ku Lagoon, I believe, is in Akumal - which is an awesome are in the Riviera Mayan

Just an FYI. I have spent a bit of time down that way and would say the snorkeling is better at Half Moon and Akumal vs. Yal ku. It is a nice spot though!

Snorkle Akumal bay if you want to see sea turtles, HMB has better coral formations, YalKu is great protected area and an excellent choice if you are a first time snorkler. If go to HMB of YalKu, stop at LaBuenaVida beach bar for drinks and appetizers-ceviche stuffed avacado is excellent. If snorkle Akumal bay, LolHa resturant is beachside. Great mango marguertas, good appetizers. Akumal bay, HMB, YalKu are all within a couple of miles of each other.
