Cruise Ship Accident..Anyone hear about it?

About that picture of the Triumph...I'm generally quite a cynic, but that looked so real to me because I was on the Triumph in September 2002 and we did indeed have to out run a hurricane! The worst of it was the night of the 11th and the day of the 12th. And the hurricane was Gustav. So after some fact checking, I agree the pic is fake. But considering what that experience was like on my cruise, had the facts added up, I probably would have believed it! I'll attach a portion of my trip write up (review) covering that night and day if anyone is interested...read on.

"...The day progressed and oh yeah, it was a cloudy dreary day in Sydney Nova Scotia, a Port where we never even got off the boat. It didn’t start to rain until about 4 that afternoon. It was also sometime around then when we ran into Brooklyn while on a food run. He relayed to us the message that the Cruise Director had just given about the hurricane and the very real possibility of missing the next Port which was to be Halifax on Thursday. A few hours later I was again wandering aimlessly on the outside decks noticing employees busily tying up every thing on the outside of that ship that wasn't attached, when the official announcement came from the Captain. If we stayed on course, we would essentially meet face to face with hurricane Gustav in Halifax. So needless to say we didn’t go there. The decision was made to put the hammer down due east about 150 miles out into the ocean to get around the hurricane which was heading up the coast. This was no big deal to us as we had already been to Halifax on the 99 cruise and of course always enjoy days at sea. The water just flew by our window where as til then we'd just been trotting along. Several times while we were upstairs through the evening's dinner/show routine, I'd stick my head outside and get a feel for how it was. Right before dinner the rain had really gotten heavy. So much so that when outside it was hard to get away from it blowing in on me. I love stuff like that so I kept going out there several times just to experience what we knew surely had to be the outskirts of the hurricane. The only thing that could have made it better was if it were daylight. You could see the waves up against the ship and the heavy mist and rain in the air but that was about it. During the show that night (a fellow from the Platters by the way), we sat near the outside emergency exit doors and you wouldn't believe the wind! Whistling through the closed doors loud enough to almost detract from the show! Of course this had me so curious I was ready to leave the show and head up on deck. Steph didn't mind leaving the show early either since neither of us were much into the Platters for obvious reasons. Only she had sleep on her mind, so I made the trip upstairs solo. And much to my dismay I began seeing signs on all the doors (Due to Very Strong Winds Keep this Door Closed). What!!! How in the world am I supposed to enjoy this hurricane if I can't get outside!!! Oh well, I nosed around and looked out windows as much as possible before running on to "side of beef guy", our dinner companion from York PA. We called him that as he ate practically nothing but steak. He'd sit there and eat nothing at all through those fantastic cruise ship dinners because it wasn't plain old fashioned meat and potatoes country boy cooking. He really reminded me of Weston. Anyway, its about midnight by now and he also is exploring to see what he can see of this storm. So we decided to go to the upper level of the Lido restaurant, because no one is ever there. Sure enough the signs weren't yet on those doors due to its being such an isolated area. We went outside onto the deck and it was just amazing. The wind was super strong and the sea was super rough. Leaning your head over the deck would occasionally get you a rain drop in the head which stung like you can't imagine. So we took to walking forward which was hardly taking off actually since you could walk practically clear bent over forward and have the wind old you up. Neither of us let loose of the stacks of tied up deck chairs along the wall a whole lot though. Finally reaching a door back inside up the ship a ways I was glad no one saw us as they would have probably yelled at us for being morons. Oh well, what else is new. Back inside I took off for bed.

Thursday. The night was a long one. And the ship was beginning to rock pretty hard by the time I got back to the room. I stared out the window a good bit then went to bed. We both generally rolled side to side for a while, which pretty much prohibited ever falling to sleep. And besides the motion if you did start to drift off, that’s when a variety of things decided to fall on the floor. By morning the counter was pretty much cleared off and I had my water cup wedged between the night stand and the couch. Noises throughout the ship were numerous as well. Sudden bangs and crashes were common the rest of the night and throughout the whole next day. Some crashes which were probably waves, literally shook the ship. It was pretty crazy, and upon rising with at best 3 or 4 hrs of sleep, I was even further disappointed when I saw that those darn signs were up everywhere! And what didn't have a locked door to the outside (basically only the Lido pool area) had the steps leading to the rails tied off. Basically I was still in the far reaches of a hurricane and couldn't get anywhere close the edge of the ship. The day was very cloudy, very cool, very windy and very slow. We could eat. We could always eat, that’s the great part of cruising. However it was supposed to have been a port day and so had very few on ship indoor activities planned. They said they'd add some but if they did we sure couldn't find them. Basically sat around, reading, resting, eating long meals and generally doing nothing while the boat rocked and creaked incessantly. I guess we did go to the casino some so that was nice, as long as we did well that is. Thank God we didn't get sick or the day would have been even worse. About 3 in the afternoon we finally got to sleep and slept until 6. A 3hr nap! I probably didn't even take 3hr naps when I was a year old! Nothing else to do though, we figured, except sleep til time for dinner and a show then the evening will at least be as normal. Nope, not normal there either. Corey came on the horn after we woke up and said, well, due to the continued movement of the ship and the fact that tens of thousands of dollars worth of show scenery were destroyed overnight, there would be no show. Man, what a day. They did show a movie on the big screen in the main lounge after dinner though…Big Trouble with Tim "Tool Man" Allen. So that was ok with me. We went off to bed and hoped that Friday would be more of a traditional day at sea."

I was on the Triumph during the Hurricane. The waves were breaking over the bow. We were on Deck six and we had water running down the hallway. After the storm you could see pressure cracks in the Bow. We were told that the Crew Bar (which is on Deck 4) was pretty smashed up.

I will admit that I did not see a plane or helicopter flying around the ship during the storm

It was the Clipper Odysey - Ran hard aground on rocks in the Aleutian Islands, forcing 153 passengers and crew to transfer to other ships and spilling an undetermined amount of fuel from a ruptured tank. No injuries were reported and the ship floated free with the tide early Sunday. It proceeded on its own power to Unalaska.
