Snorkel tour or on my own

I've read a ton of threads on here for the stingray tour. I've also found lots of info for snorkeling from shore. Sounds like eden rock close to the cruise ship port is awesome.

 

Here's the question for those who have done both. Is it worth forking out the cash to do a stingray/barrier reef? Or, just go on my own and see just as much.

 

Will the only thing I miss on a tour is playing with the stingrays and photo ops. Will I see just as much at eden rock and maybe even swimming out to the cali?
