snorkeling on your own

Are there any good spots on Tortola for snorkeling. Maybe a private operator as we don't like the hundreds of people that join the ships tours.

Any thoughts other than the Baths - we've done that several times.

A month ago we were in Tortola and went to Brewer's Bay. There's a small bar there and a good sized beach with shade and chairs you could rent. The area directly in front of the bar (at the left hand end of the beach facing the water) was good for snorkelling with lots of coral. If you go out a bit of a ways on the left hand side there's a small cove...others we shared a cab with went into the bay and saw sea turtles. It's fun as well watching the pelicans dive into the water very close to you. The beach was quiet...perhaps 100 people in total. We just grabbed a cab at the pier and arranged a time for him to come back to pick us up.

Brewers seems to be hit and miss for snorkelling... We were there in Feb and the waves were stirring up too much sand to see anything at all. Brewers is pretty open to the ocean and our taxi driver said snorkelling can be tricky there most days. It was a bit dissapointing, but we ended up having fun anyway playing in the waves and watching the pelicans. The beach is still worth it since it is a lot less busy than CGB and very scenic. I'd say go for it, but depending on the weather be prepared to do something other than snorkelling. Our cab was $6 PP each way and our driver just hung out at the beach all day and waited for us (said it wasn't worth driving back to town).

Hope that helps!

We took a cab to Brewers in January and loved the snorkeling! We saw sea turtles, dozons of schools of fish and single good size fish and lobster. We swam along the left hand side along the cliff and before we knew it we were way out from where we started from, we had a blast! Have a great time, it is a beautiful island. Laura
