Passports?

Recommended Posts

If you are entering Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean by land/and or sea, passports are not yet required. They will be required by January 2008 at the earliest and around June 2009 at the latest. They strongly suggest that you get one in case of emergencies, etc., in case you would have to fly back home from one of the ports, but you do not have to have one yet. If you are traveling by air to these places, you DO need a passport as of January 2007.

Kids (including infants) are covered by the same requirements for passports as are adults.

In a nutshell:

Under the age of 16, kids passports issued expire on a shorter time-line than do adult passports (the fees are also lower).

The child needs a certified copy of his/her birth certificate, all of the paperwork, and the photographs to apply. The child does need to be present - either both parents need to be present and provide photo ID, or if one parent cannot be present, there is a form that needs to be completed by the absent parent and notarized. If the absent parent is deceased or no longer has parental rights, you'll need a certified copy of the death certificate or court papers.

Check the state department's web site for more info and downloadable forms.
