Tips Pooled or not? Lets find out once and for all

There has been a never ending discussion on whether there is any pooling of tips when tipped in cash or left on your S&S.

Where can we get a real answer? Not a crew member told me,ect, ect.

Many post's state that a tip left on the S&S goes to the crew member, extra tips goes to crew member, but a tip in cash instead of a S&S tip must be pooled and shared. This does not seem right.

I even read in CC feature article http://www.cruisecritic.com/features/articles.cfm?ID=261

last section "In the end" that they tip in cash. So if a captain and his wife tip in cash, why not everyone else?

So if we all send an email to Want to suggest an idea for a future behind-the-scenes "Under the Captain's Table" story about life onboard? Drop a note to editor@cruisecritic.com.

Steve,

How much money do you make? How do you split it up? What do you spend it on?

Why? Who cares?

This doesn't affect US one way or another.

Actually Pete, I cared.... While on my March 31st Liberty cruise I actually asked 3 employees about the extra tips that I gave them and this is what I was told...

1. ALL THE DEALERS in the Casino pool the tips..... Although we had a great staff that week, I personally think it stinks... If one dealer was friendlier than another, I want that dealer to get my tip and not have to share it...

2. MY ROOM STEWARD.... told me that he gets the tips directly from the sign-n-sail card but the extra tip I gave him he had to share with his helper ... that one I had no problem with because they were both great that week...

3. OUR ASST WAITRESS.... she also told me that what is left on the sign-n-sail card goes directly to her and OUR head waiter but the extra tip that we gave her only, unfortunately she had to share it with the head waiter.. Again, personally, I thought it stunk because while he was very good at his job, he had no personality while she was also very good at her job, but she also sat with us, talked to us, laughed with the kids and we just enjoyed her more...

So, again, to me it mattered...

It does matter to me if I am hurting someone. This question has been going around and around. If we are hurting them, then the auto-tips are not just a matter of convienance.

Steve cared, that's why she asked the question.

Nobody asked if YOU cared.

Why open the thread if you didn't care. The title said it all.

This is just another one of your nasty replies.

Honestly, you'll never have that answer. Several reasons, but I want to keep this short!

1. Most employers have a "no discussion" policy amongst the crew about wages, tips, etc... It is a written warning at my job if you are caught discussing your wages/tips with other crew members.

2. It's tacky. I know I most certainly would not answer a customer who asked me how much money I make or how my tips are allotted. It's none of their business.

3. It's TACKY. I would be rather be hanging from my eyelid on a nail from the Empire State Building than ask someone about their income in that way, whether I contribute to that income or not. Would you ask this question of a waiter/waitress at a restaurant? Your barber or hairdresser? The paperboy/girl?

4. It's TACKY.

5. See 2, 3, and 4! :)

Getting an answer to this question would ruin all chances of those awesome crew people getting good tips. For example, if you choose to tip based on the performance of your server's assistant (who let's say gets some of the tips that people put on the S&S card for the head sever), your head server gets screwed.

The crew probably has a hard enough time getting decent tips. It's doubly worse considering some of the behavior they probably have to put up with and not be compensated for. Don't make it worse. Just take comfort in knowing you did the right thing and tipped for a job well done (assuming you, the general you, do tip). Let the rest be.

I am looking at this question different then some. I don't think anyone is saying ask them "how much" they make but "if" they have to share. I personally agree if you have someone that is wonderful and you tip them I agree they shouldn't have to share it with anyone. If this is the fact them maybe we the cruisers could get it changed. You wouldn't want half of a tip going to someone that was rude or did nothing to earn it or should I say I woudn't. JMHO

luvmytbear: that is a stupendous reply to this topic which seems to have no end. You have said exactly how I feel about the subject of wages and tips for the crew....IT'S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS!! Somtimes people need to wear the shoe on the other foot to be able to know how tacky inquiries of this type really affect crew members. Any person who signs up with a cruiseline is made aware of the job and what the tipping policies are...they choose to do it or not in the end. In the same instance, when we book a cruise, we are expected to apply gratuities according to the policy of that particular line.

Steve

Hurting them? Hurting them?

The only ones that hurt them are the ones that don't tip, because they see no reason to, and come up with every reason in the world to make that seem right.

If everyone says it is none of our business...then why do some make it their business to tell us how we should tip......

I never thought of it that way but that is a very good point. I was looking at some of my old post the other night and I noticed I got flamed hard when I commented on bad service and tipping. So not to be rude would "it is none of your business" fit in there?

When it's me that's paying tips, I care how they split it. It would make a difference if it meant I had to tip a different way in order for the person to keep the bulk of it. I do think it's an important question, as we do tip heavily, above and beyond what's recommended, and I'd like to know exactly who those tips are going to.

He's not asking what they make or their personal info, he's asking where OUR money is going.

Um, no. Once we tip, it's no longer OUR money, and not any of our concern how it gets divided up. Do you ask your waiter in a restaurant how his tips get allocated before you decide whether or not to tip him?

Hence the reason for asking "before" he tips.

If steve wants to know, he can ask. No sweat for you to just ignore the question ParrotRob since you seem to feel so strongly about it.

So, you're saying that if your room steward only got half of what you intended that you would tip less, or not at all? Give me a break. Tip what you think is deserved and let Carnival do the math. Put me in the "none of our business" camp.

Funny. I never got that out of the post at all. I took it that he would find a way to get more funds to the person, not less.

No, I'm not saying that at all. And I'll do my own math, thank you very much. What I'm saying is, if my steward keeps ALL tips that are applied to my sail and sign account, but has to split anything extra in cash that I hand him, that I would gladly go to the pursers desk and apply MORE to my sail and sign account for him to keep. Believe me, we tip, and we tip well, which is why I'm more concerned with where MY money is going. Why would I tip over above for excellent service, in cash, if the person I intended the tip to go to didn't even get it? Or, if I wanted him to have a certain amount, would I tip even MORE? By the end of the week, we normally tip in cash an extra $40 or so to the room steward. If tipping in cash means he doesn't keep it all, then I'll gladly apply it to his sail and sign tips from now on, IF it means he gets to keep it.

I never said that I wouldn't continue to tip if it meant they had to split it, so don't make assumptions about how much I tip "if any".

Of course it's MY money until I give it away, and of course I'm concerned about who gets it.

Ahh, but I'm not the one fighting against the original question now am I. ;)

If steve wants to ask a question, why do you care?

And if I post a reply you don't agree with or like, why do YOU care?

(PS - we can play this game all night if you want)
