How late can we hike Mendenhall?

My family and I are doing excursions in the afternoon in Juneau and won't get back until 5:30. We would like to also do some hiking around Mendenhall, but won't have time between our arrival at noon and our excursion at 2:30. So I was wondering if we could still hike up there in the early evening? I know the Visitor Center closes at 7:30, but presume we would have access to the trails? Any thoughts on how we would get back to the ship? Shuttles stop at 6 PM.

How late you can hike depends on when you're coming - you can check sunset times at http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/RS_OneDay.html

 

You can make an appointment with a cab to pick you up whenever you want. It's $30-35 to get back to the docks (they're used to such appointments).

Thanks. Sounds like a good option. Do you also have any ideas about good kayaking trips in Juneau? We have one booked on Auke Bay, but not sure if there were more scenic places to go.

Auke Bay is by far the best place to kayak - great coastline and islands to explore, with humpback whales sometimes quite close.

Good to hear--thanks. I could only find an excursion through the ship but it said it goes to Auke Bay through Smuggler's cove and the Mendenhall wetlands. Sounds like it would be OK--I appreciate your feedback!
