ArubaLisa: Disability Question

LHC

Recommended Posts

I will be in Aruba on December 26th from 11 - 8 with my daughter 29, and my disabled son 22 who uses a wheelchair for accessibility after a car accident. Any suggestions for what to do? How to get around? Accessibility? Excursions? Etc.

Thank you,

Linda Canada

Hi Linda,

Unfortunatley, written info on this subject is pretty limited, but the best available online can be found at http://www.aruba.com/about/disability.php Something with Red Sail aboard one of their catamarans sounds like a terrific option!

You could also contact http://www.octopusaruba.com/ and http://www.jollypirates.com/ to see if accommodations may be made.

If you wish to just plan a day at the beach and your son's wheelchair is accessible to the sand let me know and I can give you some additional information.

Thanks for the information...I have emailed all three companies, plus asked the equipment place if they rent sand/water wheelchairs. Holland America actually has them for Half Moon Cay usage, so I am going to ask Seattle if we can get one to use at the various ports for beach use...Thanks for all your help. If we get a wheelchair I will re email and ask about which beach would be the best.

I have contacted Life Lite medical and they will done an island tour in an accessible van for 55.00 for no less than two hours. It that sufficient to get a flavor for the island?

Linda, the island is only about 26 miles long so 2 - 3 hours is more than sufficient to see the highlights. I really hope that HAL comes through with the sand/water wheelchairs, that would really make the trip for your son.
