Water Taxi in St.Martin

Could someone please clear this up for me - I will be docking on RCCL at Phillipsburg. We want to go to Orient Beach. I thought I read that first you must take a water taxi to downtown to get a taxi. Aren't there taxis available right where we dock? What is this water taxi all about?

There are taxis at the pier that go anywhere on the island.The water taxi (really a small ferry) runs you into downtown P-Burg, half a mile away. You can get a taxi downtown but most cabs operate from the pier nowadays.

Thanks for the clarification. I think we will now take a taxi from the ship to Orient Beach or Divi Little Bay.

So would the same be true of getting a rental car from Budget? I won't need to take a water taxi? Please calrify. Thanks.

Most touristy operations have moved to the pier (cabs, tour bus groups, rental car agencies). There are 5 booths, Hertz, Budget and 3 locals at the pier and Arthurs just outside the gate to the right.
