Alessandrina Posted May 24, 2007 #1 Share Posted May 24, 2007 We would like to spend a couple of hours at Waikiki beach....is there a problem to walk through a hotel and head to the beach? Are these private beaches with access only for hotel guests? Thinking of going to Duke's Restaurant as well as I have heard on this forum that it is quite good. Thanks. Bucky3 Posted May 25, 2007 #3 Share Posted May 25, 2007 No problem at all walking through a hotel to the beach. We did just that on our cruise earlier this month. We went to International Market Place in the early morning. Then we crossed the street, walked up and through the Moana Hotel where they have this beautiful Banyan tree on the patio at the beach. From there you can leave the patio area and walk on the beach in either direction and just pick your spot on the beach. While you cannot use the hotel's chairs, etc., we have found all the hotels to be very inviting to tourists who want to walk through them or enjoy a beachside drink or food at any of their outside beach restaurants. Enjoy and Aloha!
jrobinso Posted May 25, 2007 #4 Share Posted May 25, 2007 Hawaiian hotels are very open, not a lot of walls and windows, so walk on through and enjoy the sights. however, there is plenty of beach access without walking through the hotels. If you haven't been to Waikiki before, you may be invisioning a coastline with nothing but solid hotels but that is not the case. Plenty of "open beach" access past the police dept, with a nice park...etc.I don't think there are any private beaches in Hawaii.
beachchick Posted May 25, 2007 #5 Share Posted May 25, 2007 All beaches in Hawaii are public (with a couple of very, very small exceptions). The beaches fronting the resorts and hotels are all public, including every inch of Waikiki beach. You can walk through any hotel (or along any beach access path) and just go wherever you like on the beach. Feel free to pull up your beach towel or mat anywhere you like. A few caveats are that the beaches are public, but the resort amenities (cabanas, loungers, umbrellas) are not. Typically, those are for resort guests only, although sometimes they will rent to non-guests depending on how busy it is. The rationale is that the resort guests have paid to have these amenities available and would be justifiably upset if all the items were used by non-guests. Also (probably a "duh" item), you can walk through the hotels, but you won't be able to use the pools, etc. The resorts and hotels are required to provide public access to the beaches. They are not required to provide public access to anything else--not even their restrooms, but that's never a problem. You can definitely eat/drink at the hotel restaurants and bars. Naturally, they're happy to take your money! A final little FYI (in case it is something you need to know) is that it is illegal to drink alcohol while you're on the public parts of the beaches. Duke's is very good. We always eat downstairs at the outdoor bar seating. The bar menu is excellent (and affordable). The crab and mac-nut wontons are so good...Yum. Enjoy the beach! beachchick
