nzggator Posted June 1, 2007 #1 Share Posted June 1, 2007 We are now thinking of booking the Saint John Photography tour. is the "Old City Market" or "the Carleton Martello Tower" within walking distance of the ship? I am reading that Carleton Martello Tower is on the west side of Saint John. What side does the shps dock on? If the ships docks on the west side how far is it to the Carleton Martello Tower? Thanks in advance

I am reading that Carleton Martello Tower is on the west side of Saint John. What side does the shps dock on? If the ships docks on the west side how far is it to the Carleton Martello Tower? Thanks in advance You can easily walk to the Saint John City Market. Just turn left as you leave the ship and walk up the street to King Street. Turn right and walk up the hill to Germain Street. Turn left and the City Market entrance is just ahead on your right. OR--if the weather isn't great, walk up to King Street and enter the Market Square shopping area and take the indoor pedway system up to the City Market. You will go up several escalators on the way and if confused don't hesitate to ask for directions. People are very helpful. The Martello Tower is on the opposite side of the harbour from the ship dock and pedestrians are not allowed on the Harbour Bridge. It is also too far to walk comfortably anyway. Try a taxi. As you approach Saint John Harbour you should be able to see the tower on the port side, as it was originally built to repel American visitors that might come this way. Today we are far more welcoming. Hope you enjoy your visit.
Acey Posted June 3, 2007 #3 Share Posted June 3, 2007 We are now thinking of booking the Saint John Photography tour.is the "Old City Market" or "the Carleton Martello Tower" within walking distance of the ship? I am reading that Carleton Martello Tower is on the west side of Saint John. What side does the shps dock on? If the ships docks on the west side how far is it to the Carleton Martello Tower? Thanks in advance Transportation is provided for this tour. If you don't need the advice from the photographer, you can easily reach these sites on your own. The Old City market and Loyalist Burial Grounds are right uptown near the ship dock. The Martello tower and Reversing Falls can be reached by: 1. Walk the "Harbour Passage Trail" around the harbour for 1/2 an hour, then continue along Douglas Ave. to Reversing Falls 10-15 min. Keep in mind there are 2 sighting spots - Fallsview Park off Douglas Ave. on the way, and the main Reversing Falls look out on the other side of the river reachable if you just keep walking then cross the reversing falls bridge (pedestrians allowed on this bridge) From Reversing Falls Martello Tower is about a 15 min walk. Then you could bus it back or walk or taxi. 2. In front of city hall (get off ship, turn left, walk 2 blocks to city hall) you can catch a city transit bus route #4 Saint John West. It will take you right to reversing falls, or stay on it and go right to martello tower, and maybe back step to reversing falls - bus is $2.25 CDN Bus comes every 15 min. Depending on the genre of photography you are interested in - there may be no need to go to the west side. Where the ship docks is one of the oldest parts of Canada with great architecture, angry gargoyles, majestic church steeples, statues with pigeon droppings on their heads, alleys from by-gone eras, wealth, poverty, weathered buildings with weather faces looking out the windows - my point is I'm a photographer and there's enough uptown to keep you busy for hours.
