Purser will cash them at no charge. Safer than bringing a "wad of cash". I budget $100/day. I never spend anywhere near that amount. But it's always better to bring to much, rsther than to little

Bring a little more than you think you will need. Over guestimate $300 for three people for tips (yes, it will be less but you might end up wanting to tip a little extra). Figure on two to three drinks a night (maybe less, maybe more -don't know you guys). Don't know how old your son is but figure he'll want some soft drinks or virgin drinks. What if you decide on playing a little in the casino? There's also tipping extras like the porters who take your bags, the people from the excursions, a favorite bartender or server, shopping on the islands, etc... I would say $100 per day over the $300. The worst that happens is that you have money left over to bring home. It would suck to run out of money while on vacation. There is an ATM on board but there is a chance of it running out of money.

If you pay by travellers check for the SS card, at the end of the cruise do the write a check for remaining balance or do they give you travellers check in the amount?

Also if they give check, does anyone know if they will give a portion of the check in cash?

If paying by traveler's checks or cash you'll get a check for the amount that you haven't spent, and it can either be deposited at your bank at home OR you can have it cashed at the Purser's desk prior to disembarking.
Stupid question alert!!! Do you get travelers checks from the credit card company or from the bank?
I always get them from my bank. I know you can get them from AAA and I think from credit cards but you have to send away for them. My bank charges $1 per $100 in travelers checks.

Not a stupid question but I never heard of a credit card company that issues traveler's checks. I get them in person at the bank or AAA because they ask you to sign them in person.

You can shop around for a good rate though.

You can get them from a bank or credit union. You can buy in denomonations of $20, $50 or $100.

I always take travelers checks. I would count on spending about $100 a day per person.

Travelers Checks are a must, they are safer than carrying cash. You can cash them at the purser deck, but the line be shorter at the cashier window in the casino. How much is up to you. On our first are sail n sign total was around $800 with excursions. On our last it was around $1000 without the excursions. So like I said it is up to how much you think you will do and spend. It better to be safe and bring money home after your cruise than to run short.
